Mary Lennox Across Time: Female Representation in Three Film Adaptations of The Secret Garden

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá třemi filmovými adaptacemi dětského románu Tajemná zahrada (dříve Tajná zahrada) spisovatelky F. H. Burnettové. Práce se zabývá hlavní hrdinkou Mary Lennoxovou a zobrazuje její vývoj napříč adaptacemi. Práce je rozdělena na teoretickou část, která krátce představuje teorii adaptace a genderovou teorii, a na analytickou část, která se zabývá analýzou a srovnáním filmů z roku 1949, 1993 a 2020. Analytická část se soustředí na vyobrazení genderu hlavní postavy a na to, jak měnící se vyobrazení souvisí se změnami ve vyobrazení jejího příběhu.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis focuses on three film adaptations of the children’s novel The Secret Garden by F. H. Burnett. The thesis traces the progress in the portrayal of the heroine Mary Lennox in relation to her displacement. The thesis is divided into a theoretical part concerned with adaptation theory and gender theory, and into an analytical part where the analysis and comparison of the 1949, 1993 and 2020 films are provided. The analysis focuses on the construction of Mary’s gender and the impact the changes have on the portrayal of her experience and her displacement.
