Media's construction of man's identity in Czech TV drama: discourse analysis

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na mediální konstrukci mužské identity ve vybraných českých seriálech Nemocnice na kraji města (1978) a Pojišťovna štěstí (2004). Metodou diskursivní analýzy se na dialozích seriálových postav třech vybraných dílů daných seriálů pokouší identifikovat diskursivní mechanismy, prostřednictvím kterých je konstruován obraz muže. Přednostně se snaží zjistit, zdali se mechanismy reprezentace mužství mění v průběhu času, a potažmo tak nabízejí prostor pro v současnosti diskutované netradiční projevy mužské identity. V teoretické části při tom vychází zejména z mediálních konceptů (sociální konstrukce reality, ideologie a hegemonie, reprezentace, stereotypizace, působení televize) a genderových konceptů (pohlaví, gender, biologický determinismus, sociální konstruktivismus, tradiční mužské a ženské role, krize mužské identity, nová mužství). Analýza dochází k závěru, že se diskursivní strategie seriálových mluvčích Nemocnice na kraji města podílí na reprodukci tradičního stereotypního obrazu maskulinity, kdežto diskursivní strategie užité postavami v seriálu Pojišťovna štěstí otevírají prostor pro dialog v oblasti genderových vztahů, čímž podporují novou mužskou identitu.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on a reconstruction of man´s identity in Czech TV dramas Nemocnice na kraji města (1978) and Pojišťovna štěstí (2004). By means of discourse analysis the thesis aspires to identify in the dialogues of serie´s characters the mechanisms by which the image of man is presented. It gives priority to detecting whether the given mechanisms of representation of man´s identity change in time and thus give the place for alternative role patterns. The theoretical part of the thesis is based on several media concepts (social construction of reality, ideology and hegemony, representation, stereotypisation, influence of television) and on gender concepts (sex, gender, biological determinism, social constructivism, traditional man and woman roles, crisis of man´s identity, new menhood). The analysis concludes that the disourse strategies of drama´s characters of Nemocnice na kraji města contribute to a reproduction of traditional stereotypical image of masculinity whereas the discoursive strategie of characters in Pojišťovna štěstí open the place for the dialogue in the gender area and by this they support the new man´s identity.
