Effects of mercury in the air on the health, focused on the surroundings of Litvínov

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá především kontaminací ovzduší rtutí a jejím možným dopadem na zdraví obyvatel v okolí města Litvínova se zaměřením na dětskou populaci. Teoretická část se věnuje kontaminaci ovzduší rtutí, jejími transformacemi, jakož i přírodními a antropogenními emisemi. Zároveň ale zkoumá vliv rtuti a jejích možných dopadů na zdraví člověka se zohledněním dat z dostupných studií. V první oblasti praktické části je vypracován odhad rtuti ze všech složek životního prostředí, kterými jsou ovzduší, voda, půda a potrava a následně odhad absorpce rtuti v organismu, to vše při porovnání odhadu přijaté rtuti s její maximální denní dávkou. Naproti tomu druhá oblast praktické části se zabývá vyhodnocením dat z analýzy rtuti ze vzorků vlasu, a to v závislosti na vybraných aspektech. V konečné fázi jsou koncentrace rtuti ze vzorku vlasů porovnány s výsledky jiného výzkumu. Závěr vyznívá tak, že kontaminace ovzduší rtutí v zájmové oblasti nehraje podstatnou roli a stejně tak není nijak zásadní její vliv na řadu neurologických onemocnění ve srovnání s ostatními cestami příjmu rtuti do lidského organismu. Z výzkumu je dále patrné, že koncentrace rtuti ve vlasech dětí je zanedbatelná ve vztahu k možnosti zmíněných onemocnění.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals mainly with mercury air contamination and certain possible impact on the health of the population around the town Litvínov with a focus on the child population. The theoretical part deals with mercury air contamination, its transformation, continues with natural and anthropogenic emissions. At the same time, it examines the effect of mercury and any possible effects on human health with regard to data from available studies. In the first area of the practical part there is an estimate of mercury from all components of the environment which are air, water, soil and food, and then an estimate of mercury absorption in the body, all when comparing the estimate of mercury taken with its maximum daily dose. In contrast, the second area of the practical part deals with the evaluation of data from mercury analyses from a hair sample, depending on selected aspects. In the final phase, the concentrations of mercury from hair samples are compared with the results of other research. The conclusion is that contaminating the air with mercury in the area of interest does not play such a significant role, nor is there a significant impact on many neurological diseases in comparison with other routes of mercury intake into the human body. The research also shows that the concentration in the hair of children is negligible of these diseases.
