Vlado Milunić: Architectonic Work of 70's and 80's

Abstract:

V Praze působící architekt Vlado Milunić patří díky spolupráci s Frankem O' Gehry na „Tančícím domě“ mezí nejznámější architekty působící v České republice (ačkoliv on sám je původem z Chorvatska). Tato práce je však zaměřena na jeho veřejnosti méně známé architektonické dílo ze sedmdesátých a osmdesátých let dvacátého století. První kapitola slouží k nastínění hlavního cíle práce. Druhá kapitola je pak věnována rozboru dostupné literatury o československé architektuře 70. a 80. let minulého století, a to jak pramenů dobových tak současných statí. Třetí kapitola na toto téma plynule navazuje a rozebírá samotnou československou architekturou 70. a 80. let. V této kapitole jsou rovněž popsána klíčová díla sledovaného období a jejich autoři. Obě kapitoly o architektuře 70. a 80. let mají za úkol v prvé řadě zasadit tvorbu Vlada Miluniće do kontextu doby, ve které tato díla vznikala, a v druhé řadě vystihnout situaci v architektuře v době, která nebyla tvůrčí práci příliš nakloněna. Po těchto úvodních kapitolách následuje již samotné jádro práce, osobnost architekta Vlada Miluniće a jeho dílo. Čtvrtá kapitola je proto věnována životní dráze Vlada Miluniće, jeho studiím a krátkému popisu jeho prácí až do současnosti. Kapitola pátá popisuje úspěšnou spolupráci Vlada Miluniće s kolegou Janem Línkem, se kterým od roku 1969 po dobu dvaceti jedna let tvořili tvůrčí tandem. Kapitola šestá je proto věnována tématu sociálního bydlení a bydlení starých lidí. Projektování a stavba tzv. „geriatrických komplexů“ totiž tvoří převážnou část společné tvorby obou autorů. Kapitola sedmá pak obsahuje katalog prací Vlada Miluniće. Katalog je rozdělen na dvě části – realizované stavby a nerealizované projekty. Obě části katalogu jsou řazeny chronologicky a obsahují u každé stavby či studie všechny významné údaje včetně krátké anotace a komentáře. Autorka práce rovněž využila možnosti setkání s žijícím tvůrcem a na závěr práce zařadila rozhovor s Vladem Milunićem, který tak dokresluje a přibližuje osobnost architekta a jeho dílo.

Abstract:

Prague-based architect Vlado Milunić ranks amongst the well-known architects settled in the Czech Republic (himself not being of the Czech origin) due to his cooperation with Frank O' Gehry on the acclaimed “Ginger and Fred” building (also referred to as “Dancing House”). This thesis, however, focuses on his less-known architectonic works executed in the former Czechoslovakia in 70 's and 80 's of the 20th century. The first chapter explains the main rationale of this thesis. The second chapter discusses a scarce literature devoted to the Czechoslovakian architecture of 70 's and 80 's, covering both books coming from the period and the most recent treatises. The third chapter deals with the Czechoslovakian architecture of 70' s and 80' s itself. Several major architectonic works of this era and their authors are also mentioned. These two chapters are supposed to not only place Milunić 's work in the context of architecture and art movements of that era but also provide a modest picture of development of the architecture in the former Czechoslovakia. Following these two introductory chapters, the rest of my thesis is devoted solely to the personality of Vlado Milunić and his own works. Chapter four introduces brief background information about Vlado Milunić. Chapter five focuses on his fruitful cooperation with another colleague – Jan Línek. Chapter seven is devoted to the social housing and a cardinal theme of both authors – so called “geriatric complexes“. Furthermore, a detailed catalogue of Milunić 's works is included in chapter seven. The catalogue is divided into two parts – buildings and unexecuted projects. Milunić 's buildings are showcased in chronological order, beginning with Barrandov dwelling units in 1970 and ending with reconstruction of flat of the future President Vaclav Havel in 1986. Each project is clearly identified, with critical data (client, program, materials) listed as applicable and brief project descriptions for the key works. Similar methodology is used with regards of unexecuted projects. Chapter eight is dedicated to the interview of Vlado Milunić with the author of this thesis. This chapter is supposed to put previous chapters in personal perspective of Vlado Mladunić and provide the readers with some insider information.
