Gamekeeping in an ethnological perspective

Abstract:

Anotace Myslivost je bohatou kulturní tradicí, která vznikla v západní Evropě a rozšířila se do střední Evropy. Má svůj počátek v tradicích a zvyklostech lovu, kterým se věnovala feudální vrchnost ve středověku. Postupně se rozvinula ve specifický kulturní fenomén, který reguloval panovník a vrchnost, především v 18. století, kdy Marie Terezie vydala Lesní řád, zákon, jenž chránil lesy a reguloval přístup k nim. Postupně ve spojení s myslivostí vznikaly bohaté kulturní tradice, především v oblasti odívání, hudby a společenských zvyklostí a obřadů. Myslivecké tradice také zahrnovaly uctívání specifických světců, především sv. Eustacha a sv. Huberta, jejichž legendy jsou spojené s lovem. Ve světské rovině měla hudba praktickou roli při organizování lovů. Myslivost je specializovaný obor činnosti, který se věnuje péči o lesní zvěř, udržování ekologické rovnováhy a lovu zvířat. Myslivci i v současnosti vydávají oborovou literaturu a dodržují zvyky a tradice.

Abstract:

Annotation Gamekeeping is a rich cultural phenomenon which originated in Western Europe and spread to Central Europe. It emerged from methods and traditions practised by the feudal nobility in the Middle ages. Gradually, it developed into a specific occupation which was regulated by the nobility and the sovereign, most notably in the 18th century when Empress Maria Theresa created the Code of woods and timber which aimed to protect the forest and regulated peasants´ access to it. Gradually, rich traditions have emerged in connection with gamekeeping, mainly concerning clothing, music and social customs and rituals. Gamekeeping also includes the worship of specific saints, notably St. Eustace and St. Hubert, whose saintly legends involve hunting. From a secular perspective music served a useful signal for organizing a hunt. Gamekeeping is a special area of expertise which focuses on caring for forest animals, maintaining ecological balance, tending to their natural environment as well as hunting animals. Today, gamekeepers continue to publish specialist literature and preserve their traditions.
