Jedním z důležitých mediátorů, které se podílejí na regulaci nervového a imunitního systému, je serotonin. Serotonin působí nejen jako neurotransmiter a neuromodulátor, ale zřejmě se také značnou měrou podílí na rozdílných funkcích imunitního systému. There is now incontrovertible evidence that the nervous and immune systems interact bidirectionally. One potent mediator which plays a role in regulating both the nervous and immune systems is serotonin. Serotonin acts as a neurotransmitter and a neuromodulator but it appears to also have a considerable influence on constituents of the immune system.
