T: Camera obscura in contemporary photography

Abstract:

In this diploma thesis I will explain camera obscura history from the first written mention to invention of photography, explain its technical side and also offer the simple guidelines how to build your own camera obscura at home. I will demonstrate pros and cons of camera obscura on selection of artists, photographers, using this technique nowadays and show the differences between camera obscura and standard “instant” photography. My aim isn’t the full list of arstists working with camera obscura up to date, instead I’d like to demonstrate different approaches and show different qualities of camera obsucra on smaller group of artists. My aim is to find out, if camera obscura could offer interesting, useful and otherwise not possible result, or if it is just useful learning step and is just better to accept natural evolution in photography with its new possibilities.

Abstract:

V tejto diplomovej práci zhrniem vývoj camery obscury od prvej zmienky až po vznik fotografie a fotoaparátu, vysvetlím princíp camery obscury, aj to ako jednoducho sa dá camera obscura vyrobiť v domácich podmienkach. Na skupine fotografov pracujúcich s touto technikou v súčasnosti, demonštrujem klady aj zápory camery obscury a poukážem na rozdiely oproti bežnej “rýchlej” fotografií. Nesnažím sa o ucelený encyklopedický prehľad všetkých mne známych autorov, ktorí dnes s technikou camery obscury pracujú. Zámerom je na vhodne vybranej vzorke ukázať rôzne prístupy a zdôrazniť jednotlivé možnosti, či vlastnosti camery obscury. Cieľom je zhodnotiť, či camera obscura dokáže pri vhodnom prístupe, či uchopení ponúknuť ešte aj dnes zaujímavý, prospešný a inak nezrealizovateľný výsledok, alebo je vhodné si cameru obscuru vyskúšať len ako určitý vývojovy stupeň fotografie, no dať voľný priebeh technologickému pokroku.
