The fear of being laughed at in adolescence: Relation to attachment, bullying and trait anxiety

Abstract:

Strach ze zesměšnění je poměrně nový konstrukt zachycující pocity úzkosti a obav v souvislosti se smíchem ostatních. Adolescence je pro svá vývojová specifika považována za nejcitlivější období pro vývoj tohoto strachu. Cílem prezentované práce bylo prověřit strach ze zesměšnění v souvislosti s citovou vazbou k rodičům, šikanou, úzkostností a počtem přátel v adolescenci. Data byla získávána prostřednictvím tištěného dotazníku distribuovaného 107 žákům základní školy a gymnázia ve věku 11-15 let. Pro měření strachu ze zesměšnění byla vytvořena adaptace škály GELOPH15 pro adolescentní populaci, pro měření citové vazby byla adaptována krátká verze dotazníku ECR-RC, úzkostnost byla měřena pomocí Škál pro měření úzkosti a úzkostlivosti dětí (ŠAD-R). Provedená korelační analýza podpořila s výjimkou vztahu strachu ze zesměšnění a vyhýbavosti ve vztahu k otci všechny hypotézy. Regresní analýza kontrolující vzájemné vztahy mezi prediktory však ukázala, že pouze úzkostnost a častá šikana souvisí se strachem ze zesměšnění. Citová vazba a počet přátel nebyly významnými prediktory strachu ze zesměšnění. Získané výsledky jsou diskutovány v kontextu zjištění předchozích studií spolu s limity a doporučeními pro budoucí výzkum.

Abstract:

The fear of being laughed at is a relatively new construct capturing feelings of anxiety and worries in relation to laugher. Adolescence is considered the most sensitive phase for the development of the fear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the fear of being laughed at in relation to parent-child attachment, bullying, trait anxiety and number of friends in adolescence. The data were obtained through paper questionnaire which was distributed to 107 pupils (aged 11-15) at primary and grammar school. An adaptation of GELOPH15 was created for measuring the fear of being laughed at, ECR-RC – short version was adapted for measuring attachment and ŠAD-R was used for measuring trait anxiety. Correlational analyses supported all hypotheses except one suggesting the fear of being laughed at is related to avoidance to father. Regression analyses controlled inter-relations between predictors and showed a significant effect of trait anxiety and frequent experiences of bullying on the fear of being laughed at. Attachment and number of friends were not significant predictors of the fear of being laughed at. Results and limitations are dis-cussed in context of previous studies, directions for future research are suggested.
