Intentionalism in abstract art

Abstract:

Diplomová práce Intencionalismus v abstraktním umění zkoumá intence umělců a jejich naplnění v uměleckých dílech. Intencionalisté zastávají názor, že znalost autorovy intence je klíčová pro interpretaci díla, které samo o sobě může mít řadu významů. V teoretické části práce jsou různá pojetí intencionalismu podrobena analýze a následně aplikována na konkrétní umělce a jejich tvorbu. Prostor je věnován i tzv. anti-intencionalismu, poukázáno je tedy i na slabá místa intencionalismu. Cílem práce je obhájit umírněný intencionalismus, který by měl být kompromisem mezi krajními stanovisky a ověřit jeho životaschopnost na konkrétních dílech abstraktního umění.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis Intentionalism in abstract art examines the intentions of the artists and their fulfilment in works of art. Intentionalists claim that knowledge of the author's intention is crucial for the interpretation of the work, which in itself can have many meanings. In the theoretical part, there are different concepts of intentionalism analyzed and subsequently applied to specific artists and their works. The thesis also discusses to the so-called anti-intentionalism, through which the weaknesses of intentionalism are presented. The aim of the thesis is to defend the moderate intentionalism, which should be a compromise between the extreme positions, and to verify its viability in relation to specific works of abstract art.
