Mineralogy and Raman spectroscopy of TiO2 minerals

Abstract:

This thesis is devoted to the analysis of TiO2 minerals with Raman spectroscopy. Thirteen samples were analysed.; seven samples of rutile from the localities: Kragerö, Tirols, Nordiach and from the Czech Republic, four samples of anatase from the localities: Tawetch, Horní Bory and Rauris, two samples of brookite from the localities Hohe Säule and Magnet Cove. The Raman spectrums are compared with the standards from the internet database RRUFF, and they correspond with the estimated phases. The effect of the orientation of the analysed crystal towards the direction of the polarisation of the spectrometer’s laser on the final spectrum has been described. The relationships between the impurities in the chemical compositions of the sapmples (measured by electron microprobe) and the final spectrums (the particular peaks) were observed too: the main peak of the anatase have the tendency of moving to the left (to smaller values of Raman shift) with the growing concentration of chemical impurities. In the case of rutile and brookite no similar trend was observed.

Abstract:

V této práci se věnuju analýze TiO2 minerálů pomocí Ramanovské spektroskopie. V první části práce jsou srhnuté hlavní literární informáce o různych modifikácích TiO2 minerálů a o Ramanovské spektroskopií. V druhé části jsou shrnuty výsledky analýz Ramanovskou spektroskopií, uvedena fotodokumentace, makroskopický a mikroskopický popis, výsledky chemických analýz, jejich interpretace a diskuse. Bylo studováno 13 vzorků: anatasy z lokalit Tawetch, Horní Bory a dva vzorky z lokality Rauris, rutily z lokalit Kragerö, Tiroly, Nordiach a z území České Republiky, brookity z lokalit Hohe Säule a Magnet Cove. Ramanovské spektra jsou srovnávany s databází RRUFF a odpovedají předpokladaným fázám. Zjistilo se, že orientace krystalů vůči polarizaci laseru spektrometru má vliv na výsledné spektra. Taktéž je sledován vliv přítomnosti cizích prvků v struktuře minerálů na výsledné spektra, resp. na nejintenzívnější píky spekter: v případě anatasu se vyskytla tendence posunu nejintenzívnějšího píku doleva při zvětšujícím obsahu příměsi, v případě rutilu a brookitu se neurčil žádný pozorovatelný trend.
