Music and Sound Design of the Stranger Things Series

Abstract:

Táto magisterská práca sa venuje analýze zvukovej stránky seriálu Stranger Things, pričom sa opiera o jeho prvé tri série. Analýzou hudby, zvukového dizajnu a ďalších zvukových zložiek si kladie za cieľ overiť predovšetkým ich dramaturgickú funkčnosť, a tým aj v konečnom dôsledku posúdiť zohranú úlohu zvukového spracovania v kontexte celkového diváckeho úspechu seriálu, či jeho odbornej kritiky. Podobne aj pri analýze zvukového mixu nesústreďuje pozornosť na technické - ale umelecké prostriedky a postupy ktoré ovplyvňujú vnímanie emócii a významov v príbehu, a ktoré posúvajú zmyslový a kinestetický divácky zážitok. Práca vychádza najmä z vlastného pozorovania, nasledovnej kategorizácie, popisu a zhodnotenia funkčnosti daných dramaturgických prostriedkov, a to špeciálne na poli rozsiahlejšieho televízneho formátu s kinematografickými ambíciami. V menšej miere čerpá aj z prevzatých rozhovorov s tvorcami seriálu, skrz ktoré približuje ich zámery a postupy, ktoré môže porovnať s naplneným diváckym dojmom, a zároveň čiastočne vyvážiť subjektivitu hodnotenia autorky textu. Táto magisterská práca je zacielená hlavne na študentov filmu, či začínajúcich filmárov, za účelom dodania inšpirácie či odvahy byť v tvorbe kreatívny a zároveň sa nebrániť aj zaužívaným zvukárskym postupom, pretože tým môžu dosiahnuť osviežujúci a zároveň divácky stráviteľný filmový či televízny zážitok, aký ponúkajú aj doterajšie tri série Stranger Things. Zároveň môže práca slúžiť ako podklad pre pozornejšie sledovanie nadchádzajúcej série (či sérií) tohto seriálu.

Abstract:

This master's thesis analyzes the sound perspective of the Stranger Things series, drawing on its first three seasons. By analyzing music, sound design and other sound components, it aims to verify their dramaturgical functionality above all, and thus eventually review the role of sound treatment in context of the overall success of the series among viewers, or its professional critique. Similarly, in analysis of the sound mix, it does not focus on technical - but artistic means and procedures that affect the perception of emotions and meanings in the story and shift the sensory and kinesthetic viewing experience. The work is based mainly on my own observation, subsequent categorization, description and evaluation of functionality of these dramaturgical means, especially in the field of a larger television format with cinematic ambitions. To a lesser extent, it also draws on the taken interviews with the creators of the series, through which it presents their intentions and methods, which can be compared with the fulfilled viewer-point impression, and at the same time partially balance the subjective evaluation of this thesis author. This master's thesis is aimed mainly at film students or beginning filmmakers, in order to provide inspiration or courage to be creative in their work and at the same time not to constrain from the usual sound production methods too, because they can achieve a refreshing and at the same time entertainingly consumable film or television experience, as are the three seasons of Stranger Things so far. At the same time, the work can serve as a basis for more thoroughful watching of the upcoming season (or seasons) of this series.
