Russel Wright's Manitoga as a conceptual forerunner of the ecological tendencies in contemporary architecture

Abstract:

Russel Wright byl klíčovou osobností amerického užitého designu 30.–50. let minulého století a výrazně se zasadil ve věci ekologické osvěty a budování vztahu mezi americkými občany a životním prostředím. Účelem této bakalářské práce je představit evropskému prostředí osobnost a tvorbu Russela Wrighta, především však jeho vlastní dům Manitogu. V práci se snažím přijít na to, jak Manitoga a podobné proekologické stavby ovlivnily nástup tzv. zelené architektury v 90. letech 20. století. V práci představuji osobnost Russela Wrighta, nastiňuji historický kontext USA ve 20. století, věnuji se historii Wrightova pozemku a následně i popisu a stylovému zařazení samotného domu, který srovnávám s americkými rezidenčními domy pocházejícími ze stejného období. Na závěr se věnuji argumentaci ideové ekologičnosti domu a zdůvodňuji jeho vliv na poli ekologické architektury.

Abstract:

Russell Wright was a key figure of United States of America's applied arts and industrial design from 1930s to 1950s. He strongly advocated the nature conservation and tried to create a relationship between American citizens and environment. The primary aim of this bacheolor thesis is to introduce Russel Wright and his work to the European milieu, with a specific focus on Wright's own house, called Manitoga, situated near New York City. In the presented work I made an effort to ascertain whether and how did Manitoga influenced the development of the green architecture, which emerged in 1990s. I mentioned the concise historical context of the United States of America in 20th century, a history of the Wright's estate, a characterization of the residence and its architectural style. Afterwards, I compared Manitoga with selected american residential buildings from the same period. And finally, I clarified the "eco-friendliness" of the house and described it's influence on the green architecture.
