The Global Character of English Culinary Vocabulary with the Focus on Czech Language Speakers.

Abstract:

Práce bude zaměřena na globální charakter anglických slov užívaných v oblasti kulinářství a jejich přejímání do dalších jazyků, v tomto případě do jazyka Českého. Autor pojedná globální charakter angličtiny, která je obecně pojímána jako lingua franca a dále se zaměří na specifickou oblast slovní zásoby v kulinářství. Bude pojednán český jazyk a jeho současný stav a vývoj vzhledem k přejímání anglické slovní zásoby. Autor se zaměří na anglická slova běžně užívaná v českém kulinářství, předloží příklady textů, ve kterých jsou běžně užívána spolu s interpretací jejich významu i s možnými českými ekvivalenty. Výzkumná část bude obsahovat analýzu porozumění vybrané anglické kulinářské terminologie u českých mluvčí, kteří jsou profesionálními pracovníky v daném oboru, případně též u běžných českých zákazníků. Výsledky výzkumu budou podrobně analyzovány kvantitativně a důsledně interpretovány v kontextu teoretického základu práce.

Abstract:

The main objective of the thesis is to deal with English loanwords in the Czech language in the culinary field. The history of English and the Czech language is examined in the theoretical part. It explores the definition of borrowings and their reasons, also explores the loanwords, their usage, meaning, and origin of loanwords. What they are, where they come from, and from they have been borrowed. The objective of this work is to analyze whether employees of a culinary institute are familiar with relatively new terms which have plenteously occurred in the Czech language in recent years. The thesis analyzes if the experience in the industry is the main reason for knowing such words or if it is education which is the main determinant for such knowledge. These employees in the culinary field have been tested by anonymous questionnaire with open questions to be able to express themselves freely and explain the meaning of the word as much as they can. The results show that their knowledge is influenced by the length of their professional practice and the level of education.
