Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the language reclamation of the Native American Indian language Wampanoag. The main aim is to map out the process and identify the key strategies used to reconstruct and teach the language. The literature review and analyses of the language program have revealed that even though the last Wampanoag speaker died in the nineteenth century, the language is again spoken today. The revitalization was made possible due to the large body of documentation available and the leadership of Wampanoag tribe member and linguist Jessie Little Doe Baird. The thesis delves into the process of reconstitution and modernization of the Wampanoag language. Subsequently, the focus is shifted to the development of language acquisition in courses, kindergarten, and elementary and high school. At present, the majority of the Wampanoag tribes speak the language at various levels of fluency, and the new generation of children is being taught the Wampanoag language as their mother tongue.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na znovuoživení amerického domorodého jazyka Wampanoag. Hlavním cílem práce je zmapovat proces a identifikovat klíčové strategie použité k rekonstrukci a výuce jazyka. Přestože poslední mluvčí jazyka zemřel v devatenáctém století, studium vybrané literatury a analýza jazykového programu odhalily, že jazyk kmene Wampanoag je znovu používán. Revitalizace byla umožněna díky velkému množství dostupné dokumentace a dobrému vedení členky kmene a lingvistky Jessie Little Doe Baird. Tato práce zkoumá proces rekonstrukce a modernizace jazyka Wampanoag a jeho následné osvojení skrz výuku v jazykových kurzech, mateřských, základních a středních školách. V současnosti většina kmene hovoří tímto jazykem na různých jazykových úrovní a nová generace dětí si osvojuje Wampanoag jako svůj mateřský jazyk.
