The Motifs of Water and Air in Theodor Fontane's Novel "Effi Briest" in the Context of His Narrative Technique

Abstract:

The novel "Effi Briest" (1895), written by Theodor Fontane, begins with a description of the protagonist's family home, which contains symbols of death and the contradiction between Effi's nature and social conventions, and ends with her death. The motif of death runs throughout the work and appears in various forms. The motifs of water and air, which accompany Effi through her life, are very strongly present in the novel and then combine in their meaning to form a mythological story of death. The aim of this thesis is to identify the motifs of water and air, to place them in the context of the novel and to briefly consider other motifs that are closely related to the theme of death, as well as to take into account the narrative technique of the author. The contribution of the thesis is then the demonstration that on the narrative level, thanks to the aforementioned motifs, a story of an unhappy marriage and infidelity is created, alongside the story of the gradual death of an unhappy woman who defied social expectations, on a mental and then physical level.

Román "Effi Briest" (1895), jehož autorem je Theodor Fontane, začíná popisem rodného domu protagonistky, který ukrývá symboly smrti a rozporu mezi povahou Effi a společenskými konvencemi a končí její smrtí. Motiv smrti prochází celým dílem a objevuje se v nejrůznějších podobách. Velmi silně jsou v románu zastoupeny motivy vody a vzduchu, které doprovází Effi jejím životem a které se pak svým významem spojují do mytologického příběhu o smrti. Cílem práce je identifikace motivů vody a vzduchu, jejich zasazení do kontextu románu a stručné zohlednění dalších motivů, které se tématiky smrti úzce týkají, dále také zohlednění vyprávěcí techniky autora. Přínosem práce je pak ukázka toho, že na narativní rovině díky zmíněným motivům vzniká vedle příběhu o nešťastném manželství a nevěře také příběh o postupném umírání nešťastného člověka, který se vymykal společenským představám, na duševní a posléze i fyzické úrovni.
