Performance of insurers in the global Takaful sector

Abstract:

Diploma thesis deals with the issues of Islamic insurance Takaful. The main purpose of these thesis is to define individual specifics of Islamic finances in the insurance sector and to focus on the performance of the Islamic insurance companies before, during and after the crisis of 2008. The performance of the insurance companies is evaluated by ratios specifically designed by insurance industry. The ratios are underwriting, profitability, solvency and liquidity. Final resulting values are subsequently compared with conventional European insurance companies. On the basis of the summarized information from balance sheets, financial statements of selected insurance companies according to the Bloomberg terminal and annual reports of these insurance companies, the ratios were evaluated together with comparison with conventional model of insurance industry. The conclusion of this thesis comprehensively compares these ratios and evaluates, which insurance model was more financially efficient before, during and after the crisis.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá problematikou islamského poistenia Takaful. Cieľom práce je definovať jednotlivé špecifiká islamských financií v sektore poisťovníctva a zamerať sa na výkon islamských poisťovní pred, počas a po finančnej kríze v roku 2008. Výkon poisťovní je hodnotený podľa pomerových ukazovateľov špecifických pre odvetvie poisťovníctva. Ide o ukazovatele nákladovosti, rentability, solventnosti a likvidity. Výsledné hodnoty sú následné porovnávané s európskymi konvenčnými poisťovňami. Na základe sumarizovaných informácií zo súvah, výkazov zisku a strát vybraných poisťovní podľa terminálu Bloomberg a výročných správ týchto poisťovní boli vyhodnotené pomerové ukazovatele v porovnaní s konvenčným modelom poisťovníctva. Záver práce celistvo porovnáva tieto ukazovatele a vyhodnocuje, ktorý model z finančného hľadiska efektívnejšie hospodáril pred, počas a po finančnej kríze.
