Translating Popular Scientific Texts: Translation Methods and Possible Translation Problems in a Translation for National Geographic

Abstract:

The main aim of this thesis is to introduce the topic of translating popular scientific text. The text for this purpose was chosen from the National Geographic magazine and is amended as an appendix in the end of the work. The thesis includes stylistic analysis to outline the functional styles theory and to characterize the examined article. The main translation of the text is the second part of the thesis and the last part shows various ways to translate expressions which do not have a full equivalent in the target language. The practical section of the last part shows typical examples from the examined article to show how particular problems can be solved. The practical part draws from the stylistic analysis and the theoretical part of translation.

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této práce je úvod do problematiky překládání populárně naučného textu. Pro tento účel byl vybrán text z magazine National Geographic, tento text je zařazen na konci práce jako příloha. Práce obsahuje stylistickou analýzu, která je úvodem do teorie funkčních stylů a charakterizuje zkoumaný text. Ve druhé části se nachází vlastní překlad a poslední část představuje různé způsoby překladu výrazů, které v cílovém jazyce nemají plný ekvivalent. Praktická sekce poslední části uvádí typické příklady ze zkoumaného článku a ukazuje, jak mohou být konkrétní problémy řešeny. Praktická část vychází ze stylistické analýzy a z teoretické části překladu.
