Gender analysis of economic life of medieval Brno compared to Jihlava and Znojmo.

Abstract:

V předkládané dizertační práci se zaměřujeme na genderovou analýzu ekonomického života města Brna ve 14. a 15. století v komparaci se soudobou Jihlavou a Znojmem. Vedle analýzy faktického zapojení měšťanských žen do řemesel a obchodu ve srovnání s participací měšťanů, kterou jsme vypracovali především na základě pramenů berní povahy a řemeslných řádů a statut, podrobujeme zkoumání i řadu jiných aspektů, které s podílem měšťanských žen na řemeslech a obchodě bezprostředně souvisejí. Jmenujme v tomto kontextu například genderově diferencované možnosti vzdělávání měšťanek, transfery majetku v rámci mužských a ženských linií rodin či osobní a majetko-právní vztahy manželů. Tyto otázky jsou nahlíženy z různých úhlů a řešeny s využitím kvantitativní i kvalitativní analýzy spektra dobových pramenů. Při zkoumání těchto otázek se snažíme zohledňovat srovnání právní normy s praxí, které nás může upozornit na zajímavé a pro naše téma významné posuny ve vnímání některých právních institucí, jako je poručnictví, věno, manželské spoluvlastnictví atd. Text dizertační práce je strukturován s ohledem na fáze životního cyklu, což nám umožňuje nejen chronologicky sledovat pomyslný běh lidského života, ale také rozdílnou míru autonomie, která byla vlastní jednotlivým stavům tehdejší ženské části městské populace – panenskému, manželskému a vdovskému.

Abstract:

The dissertation explores and contributes to the study of economic life of the town of Brno compared to the towns of Znojmo and Jihlava during the 14th and 15th centuries through the perspective of gender analysis. Tax records, guild regulations as well as craft statutes have been our primary sources that enabled us to analyze the actual crafts and business participation of townswomen – in comparison to their male counterparts. Apart from these, we have concentrated on a number of other aspects which are directly associated with the female participation such as gender-differentiated education opportunities for townswomen, heritage transfers in terms of male and female lineages, or husband-wife proprietary rights. We have considered a broad spectrum of period documents and the mentioned problem areas from various perspectives, using qualitative and quantitative approaches. During the analysis we have also attempted to contrast the then functioning legal norms with the realities of town life – this may increasingly draw our attention to a number of significant differences in the perception of certain legal institutions such as guardianship, dowry, marital co-ownership and others. The dissertation has been structured to address townswomen in their three principal stages of life cycle – virgins, wives and widows. This approach enables us to chronologically follow an imaginary course of human life, yet at the same time, the varying extent of autonomy which was characteristic of the respective townswomen’s statuses.
