Do large players manipulate the price of bitcoin?

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou transakcí sta největších peněženek Bitcoinu, která má určit, zda největší hráči na trhu destabilizují cenu bitcoinu. V teoretické části je popsána hrubá funkčnost sítě Bitcoin spolu s technologií blockchain. Rovněž je v práci shrnut historický vývoj Bitcoinu spolu s možnými manipulačními praktikami. V praktické části byly analyzovány historické transakce sta peněženek, jež disponovaly největšími fondy v době psaní této práce. Peněženky byly rozděleny do několika kategorií a k analýze vlivu transakcí na cenu bitcoinu bylo použito 19 peněženek, jež bylo obchodně aktivními. Z analýzy bylo zjištěno, že velcí hráči (velryby) spíše stabilizují cenu bitcoinu, přestože byl nalezen malý počet peněženek s podezřelými transakcemi, kterými by mohl být trh Bitcoinu manipulován. Většina ze sta největších peněženek však nabývá stabilizačního efektu pro bitcoinový trh.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the analysis of transactions of the 100 largest Bitcoin wallets, which is to determine whether the largest players in the market destabilize the price of bitcoin. The theoretical part describes the functionality of the Bitcoin network together with blockchain technology. The work also summarizes the historical development of Bitcoin together with possible manipulation tactics. In the practical part, the historical transactions of one hundred wallets, which had the largest funds at the time of writing this work, were analyzed. The wallets were divided into several categories and 19 commercially active wallets were used to analyze the impact of transactions on the price of bitcoin. The analysis showed that large players (whales)tend to rather stabilize the price of bitcoin, although a small number of wallets with suspicious transactions were found, which could manipulate the Bitcoin market. However, most of the 100 largest wallets have a stabilizing effect on the Bitcoin market.
