Concept of Neocartography in the Study of Old Maps

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá metodami zapojení veřejnosti do studia starých map. Hlavním cílem práce je ověřit, zda a jak je možné využít veřejnost při studiu starých map, identifikovat, v čem se liší způsob práce zapojených jedinců a čím jsou tyto odlišnosti způsobeny. Teoretická část vysvětluje terminologii, a představuje aspekty zapojení veřejnosti do vědeckých projektů, mezi něž patří zapojené osoby, jejich motivace, hodnoty a limity dobrovolně sbíraných dat a další. Představeny jsou také dostupné projekty zabývající se zapojením veřejnosti do práce se starými mapami a jinými archiváliemi. Praktická část práce především hodnotí zapojení veřejnosti do studia staré mapy formou veřejné výzvy s názvem „Příběhy míst“. Sběr dat byl realizován ve dvou fázích, vždy prostřednictvím webové aplikace umožňující sběr objektivních i subjektivních informací z konkrétní staré mapy a jejich následné zpřístupnění. V první fázi byl sběr dat omezen jen na vrcholy uvedené na staré mapě, ve druhé fázi bylo možné přispívat jakoukoli informací, která se váže ke studovanému prostoru. Vyhodnocení dat ukazuje, že zapojené osoby pracují rozdílně a že tyto odlišnosti mohou být způsobeny například jejich vztahem ke studovanému prostoru. V závěru práce je diskutována jak pilotní studie, tak vyvinutá webová aplikace. Součástí diskuse je také soubor doporučení, jak postupovat v případě zapojení veřejnosti do studia starých map.

Abstract:

The dissertation deals with methods of involvement of the general public in studying old maps. The main objective of the thesis is to verify whether and how the public can be used when studying old maps and to identify the ways the individuals involved in the study work, as well as to find out the causes of different approaches. The theoretical part explains the nomenclature and introduces the aspects of the public involvement in scientific projects, including the people involved, their motivation, the values and the limits of the data collected on the voluntary basis and the like. Furthermore, available projects dealing with involvement of the general public in the work wi th old maps and other archive materials are presented. The practical part mainly evaluates the involvement of the public in the study of an old map through a public call titled "The Stories behind the Places". The data collection was organized in two phases, through a web application enabling to collect both the objective and the subjective information from a specific old map and make it available afterwards. In the first phase, the collecting of the data was limited on the peaks shown on the old map, while in the second phase people could contribute with any information related to the area being explored. The evaluation of the data reveals that the participating people work differently and that the differences may be caused, for instance, by their relationship to the subject-matter of the study. At the end of the thesis, both the pilot study and the developed web application are discussed. The discussion also includes a set of recommendations on how to engage the general public in studying old maps.
