Study of olivine-group minerals by Raman spectroscopy

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce byla spektroskopická studie minerálů skupiny olivínu pomocí Ramanovy spektroskopie. Nejprve se připravily naleštěné preparáty různých koncových členů minerální skupiny olivínu se zaměřením na běžné rožšířené silikáty této skupiny (forsterit, fayalit, tefroit – přírodní i syntetické analogy). Tyto minerály nejprve byly studovány na elektronové mikrosondě a následně na Ramanovém spektrometru za použití dvou laseru 532 a 633nm. Dalším cílem bylo rozlišení jednotlivých koncových členů skupiny olivínu za použítí Ramanovy spektroskopie a posouzení možnosti tyto minerály od sebe odlišit pro odhad chemického složení. Bylo zjištěno, že všechny studované minerály jsou vhodné pro měření na laserech 532 a 633 nm, kromě syntetického tefroitu, který nelze měřit na laseru 633 nm kvůli zančné luminiscenci. Na zákaldě Ramanových spekter bylo zjištěno, že forsterit lze odlišit od fayalitu a tefroitu. Liebenbergit se velmi obtížně rozeznává od fayalitu. Všechny měřené spektra dosahovaly svých maxim v pozicích 806 – 856 cm-1. Tyto výsledky se poté porovnali s prací Kuebler et al., 2005 a došlo se k závěru, že výsledky jsou relativně shodné.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was a spectroscopic study of minerals of the olivine group using Raman spectroscopy. Firstly, polished samples of different end-members of the olivine group were prepared, namely common silicates of the group (forsterite, fayalite, tephroite - natural and synthetic analogues). These minerals were at first studied with a use of an electron microscope and subsequently examined by the Raman spectrometer by using 532 and 633 nm lasers. Another purpose of this thesis was a distinction of individual end-members of the olivine group by using Raman spectroscopy and evaluating options of these minerals to distinguish from one another for determining their chemical composition. It was found, that all of the minerals studied are suitable for mensuration with 532 and 633 nm lasers, except for synthetic tephroite, which could not be measured by using 633 nm laser because of its substantial luminescence. Based on the Raman spectra, it was detected that forsterite can be distinguished from fayalite and tephroite. Liebenbergite can be distinguished from fayalite with an appreciable difficulty. All of the top peak positions of the measured spectra were determined in between positions 806 – 856 cm-1. These results were compared with a study by Kuebler et al., 2005, and it was decided that the results are relatively coincidental.
