The Reality of Governmental Subsidies to the Nuclear Industry. How Far from the Ideal?

Abstract:

This thesis provides an ideal theoretical model of an energy subsidy together with an evaluation of governmental subsidies to the nuclear industries of the six leading exporters of nuclear technology: The United States of America, Canada, Russian Federation, Japan, Republic of Korea and France. An establishment of an ideal theoretical model of energy subsidy answers the first of the two research questions and it is based on collection and subsequent content analysis of current scholar definitions of energy subsidy. A comparative case study of the systems of subsidizing nuclear industries in the above countries then represents an answer to the thesis’ second research question. An application of the ideal theoretical model on the six cases then leads to the conclusion suggesting that the reality of governmental subsidies to the nuclear industry has varying degrees of compliance with the theoretical ideal.
