Red Flags Indicating Financial Statement Fraud

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je shrnout poznatky o varovných signálech, jež indikují možné podvodné finanční výkaznictví, a nástrojích jejich detekce. Na základě vzorku 30 odborných studií, které byly vybrány metodou systematické literární rešerše, práce syntetizuje varovné signály do čtyř skupin na anomálie ve finančních výkazech, mimořádné události, slabé stránky vnitřního kontrolního systému a charakteristiky managementu. Ze studií vyplynulo, že mezi nástroje detekce podvodů finančních výkazů využitelné v praxi patří analytické procedury, checklisty nebo modely Benishovo M-skóre a Dechowo F-skóre. Výstupy ze systematické literární rešerše jsou aplikovány v rámci ex-ante analýzy na vybrané společnosti. V závěru práce jsou navrhnuty postupy při posuzování rizika podvodu s finančními výkazy.

Abstract:

The aim of this master thesis is to summarize the theoretical knowledge about the warning signals that indicate possible fraudulent patterns in financial statements as well as about detection tools of such conducts. The thesis synthetizes warning signals into four groups – anomalies in financial statements, extraordinary events, internal control system weaknesses and management characteristics by using a systematic literature review on a sample of 30 research papers. The review concludes that the available tools for financial practitioners are analytical procedures, checklists or Beneish M-score and Dechow F-score models. Furthermore, the findings of the systematic literature review are applied via ex-ante analysis of a chosen company. Finally, the thesis discusses possible approaches to assessing fraud risk in financial statements.
