Ethical Values in the Roman Principate: the Case of the Princeps

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je přinést nové informace o tom, jak Římané v období principátu vnímali ctnost, a to zejména prostřednictvím srovnání četnosti výskytu vybraných jedenácti ctností ve čtyřech literárních dílech z daného období, konkrétně: Dialogus de oratoribus a De vita et moribus Iulii Agricolae z pera Publia Cornelia Tacita, De vita Caesarum od Gaia Suetonia Tranquillia a Panegyricus napsaný Gaiem Pliniem Caeciliem Secundem. V souvislosti s tímto cílem se práce také pokouší ve stručnosti zmapovat hlavní vlivy, které mohly mít na vnímání ctnosti očima vybraných autorů dopad, jako byly například specifika jejich literárního stylu, jejich osobní životní zkušenosti či dobové společenské konvence.

Abstract:

The present thesis aims to shed new light on the attitudes Romans held towards virtue during the Principate. To do so, it analyses the relative frequency of eleven particular virtues within four literary works, which were published during the period in question: Dialogus de oratoribus and De vita et moribus Iulii Agricolae by Publius Cornelius Tacitus, De vita Caesarum by Gaius Suetonius Tranquillius and the Panegyricus written by Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus. In connection to this goal, the thesis also endeavours to briefly outline the main influences which could have had an impact on the data representing the authors' general perception of virtue. These include the specifics of the authors' literary style, their life experience or the social conventions prevalent in the period.
