The causality of genre and film editing as a promotional element in film trailers

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis deals with film trailers and sees them not only as promotional material, but also as short films, using specific narrative and editing strategies. The main research question of the thesis is how film genre influences the rhythm and nature of editing in trailers and how editing contributes to the genre identification of the trailer as a promotional tool. The thesis analyses 46 trailers from 1990-1999, divided into three genre groups, and combines qualitative and quantitative analytical approaches. The theoretical framework is based on the scholarly publications of authors such as Lisa Kernan, Rick Altman, Barry Keith Grant and Ken Dancynger. The practical part uses DaVinci Resolve software to analyse the editing elements and then processes the data in the form of average shot length and editing tempo. The aim of the thesis is to discover whether and how editing practices differ between genres and how they affect the viewer's perception.
