Visual Film Style of Neo-Noir in Photography

Abstract:

V minulém století se v kinematografii, ve světě detektivek a kriminálních žánrů, vyvinul významný americký styl film noir. Práce se nejprve zabývá historickým pozadím filmového stylu noir a podstatnými vlivy na něj. Následuje kapitola týkající se neo-noir, kde se čtenář dozvídá o možnostech kategorizace stylu, zejména na základě tří různých časových rovin, a použití jeho nových konvencí. Zajímavostí se stává také trend estetizace násilí ze zemí východní Asie, konkrétněji se rozebírá Japonsko, Hongkong a Jižní Korea. Znalosti z kinematografie jsou čerpány především z publikace Dějiny filmu: přehled světové kinematografie od Kristin Thompson a Davida Bordwella. Získané historické a charakteristické poznatky jsou poté aplikovány na fotografickou tvorbu. Existence stylu noir ve fotografii je však autorem smyšlená, neboť ona autenticita se nachází pouze v kinematografii. Sleduje se tedy autorův uměle vytvořený vývoj trvající až do současnosti. Od pozdního piktorialismu až po současnost jsou fotografie vyhledávány v oblastech dokumentární fotografie, fotožurnalismu, módní fotografie a inscenované fotografie. Celková teoretická část práce je komparací film noir a neo-noir, kinematografie a fotografie a také euroamerických a východoasijských děl. Praktická část se zabývá zachycením substylů noir na základě zmíněné kategorizace prostřednictvím fotografie. Shromážděné informace pomohou čtenáři pochopit souvislosti v oblasti noir a vizuálním specializacím umožní v oboru jejich vlastní interpretaci a realizaci děl.

Abstract:

In the last century, a significant American style of film noir has developed in cinema in the world of detective stories and crime films. First of all, the work presents the historical background of the noir film style and the essential influences on it. The chapter regarding to neo-noir follows, where the reader learns about the possibilities of categorizing the style, especially based on three distinct time forms, and the use of its new conventions. The interesting trend of aestheticization of violence from East Asian countries, more precisely from Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea, is also analysed. Film knowledge is drawn mainly from the book Film History: An Introduction by Kristin Thompson and David Bordwell. The gathered historical and characteristic information is then applied to photographic work. The existence of the noir style in photography is fictional though, presented by the author, since the origin has begun in the world of cinema. And therefore, the author’s created development lasting up to the present is followed. From the late pictorialism movement to the present, photographs are searched in the areas of documentary photography, photojournalism, fashion photography and staged photography. The overall theoretical part of the work is a comparison of film noir and neo-noir, cinema and photography, and also Euro-American and East Asian works. The practical part deals with the capture of noir substyles, based on the mentioned categorization, through photography. The gathered information will both help the reader to understand the context in the field of noir and other visual disciplines will be able to interpret in their own way and realize works within the field.
