Financial crisis and its influence on non-profit organisations

Abstract:

This thesis analyses the performance and activities of the Red Cross within the years 2008-2009, as well as the consequences of the crisis which came into being in 2010. The recommendations of how non-governmental organizations of different sizes should behave within the crisis are also discussed. The theoretical framework of this thesis consists of three discourses: the one about the historical overview of the global economic crisis and its implications in Belarus, the other one about non-governmental organizations, their types and sources of funding, and the last one about the performance and activities of the Red Cross. Research methods included interviews, surveys, quantitative and qualitative analysis and written documents. This thesis argues that large sized humanitarian non-governmental organizations, primarily the Red Cross, have the highest level of donor dependency, while governments and National Societies are the main donors. As a consequence, within the economic shocks it is highly necessary for NGOs to get funding from other donors otherwise the organization will stop its activities, because of the lack of funding.
