Operations of the German Battlecruisers in the North Sea 1914-1915

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje vojenským operacím německého císařského námořnictva v Severním moři v prvních dvou letech první světové války. Konkrétně je zaměřena na výpady německých bitevních křižníků vůči cílům na pobřeží Velké Británie. Jedná se o bombardování Yarmouthu 3. listopadu 1914, bombardování Scarborough, Hartlepoolu a Whitby 16. prosince 1914 a operace z 24. ledna 1915, která vyvrcholila námořní bitvou u Dogger Bank. Většina historických studií věnujících se problematice operací hladinových lodí v Severním moři se zabývá bitvou u Jutska roku 1916, největší námořní bitvou první světové války. O dřívějších událostech se zmiňují spíše jako o předehře k tomuto konečnému měření sil mezi německým císařským loďstvem a britským královským námořnictvem. Pokud se širším souvislostem této bitvy vůbec věnují, většinou nezabíhají do podrobností. Práce proto usiluje o napravení této skutečnosti a o poskytnutí nového pohledu na akce německých bitevních křižníků v letech 1914-1915. Autorovým cílem je analyzovat způsob nasazení bitevních křižníků, cíle jejich operací, proč k nim došlo, zdali byly úspěšné a jestli a jakým způsobem ovlivnily průběh první světové války.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on military operations of the Imperial German Navy in the North Sea during the first two years of World War 1, specifically German battlecruisers attacks on targets on the coast of Great Britain. These are the shelling of Yarmouth on the 3rd of November 1914, the shelling of Scarborough, Hartlepool and Whitby on the 16th of December 1914 and operations of 24th of January 1915, which led to the Dogger Bank naval battle. SMS Moltke, SMS Seydlitz, SMS von der Tann, SMS Derfflinger Majority of historical studies on surface vessel operations in the North Sea focuses on the 1916 Battle of Jutland, the largest naval battle of World War 1. Previous events are usually treated as a prelude to this final showdown between the Imperial German Navy and the British Royal Navy. If they at all study the wider context of this battle, they usually don't go into great detail. This thesis offers a new view on the operations of German battlecruisers between 1914 and 1915. Author's intent is an analysis of the form of battlecruiser deployment, the goals, causes and results of their operations and how they have influenced to course of World War 1.
