The use of ancient history and symbolism in the Macedonia naming dispute.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce na téma "Využívání antických dějin a symboliky ve sporu o název Makedonie" se zaměřuje na zachycení politického sporu mezi Severní Makedonií a Řeckem, kde obě strany rozdílnými způsoby interpretují antické dějiny geografické oblasti Makedonie. Cílem práce je ukázat, jakým způsobem dávné události dodnes ovlivňují mezinárodní vztahy a politiku. Z toho důvodu práce obsahuje dějinný vývoj a kulturní aspekty oblasti, včetně procesu vytváření současného makedonského národa. Spor o název Makedonie v poslední době vygradoval a byl formálně završen, přesto je možné, že v následujícím období bude znovu aktuální z důvodu konání předčasných parlamentních voleb v Severní Makedonii.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis "The use of ancient history and symbolism in the Macedonia naming dispute" is focused on capturing the political dispute between Northern Macedonia and Greece where both sides interpret the ancient history of the geographical area of Macedonia in different ways. The aim of this thesis is to show how ancient events still affect international relations and politics. For this reason, the thesis contains historical development and cultural aspects of the area, including the process of creating present Macedonian nation. The dispute over the name of Macedonia has recently escalated and has been formally completed, but it may still be up to date in the coming period due to the early parliamentary elections in Northern Macedonia.
