Conflict in Biafra in 1967-1970

Abstract:

Jihovýchod Nigérie představuje od šedesátých let 20. století neklidný region. Hlavní etnickou skupinou v této oblasti jsou Igbové, kteří v červenci 1967 jednostranně vyhlásili nezávislost na Nigérii. Existence jejich kvazi nezávislého státu Biafra trvala necelé tři roky a byla lemována krvavou občanskou válkou. Po vítězství federálních jednotek v lednu 1970 separatistická vláda kapitulovala. Cílem práce je provést analýzu faktorů vedoucích ke konfliktu v Biafře v letech 1967-1970, jejímž obsahem bude zaměření se na významné mezníky dekolonizačního procesu, na aktéry konfliktu, jejich vzájemné vztahy a přístup mezinárodního společenství ke konfliktu.

Abstract:

Southeast Nigeria has been a troubled region since the 1960s. The main ethnic group in the area is the Igbos, who unilaterally declared independence from Nigeria in July 1967. Their quasi-independent state of Biafra lasted less than three years and was marred by a bloody civil war. After the victory of federal troops in January 1970, the separatist government capitulated. The aim of the thesis is to analyze the factors leading to the conflict in Biafra in the years 1967-1970, the content of which will focus on important milestones of the decolonization process, on the actors of the conflict, their mutual relations and the approach of the international community to the conflict.
