The image of the sea in Czech literature of the Early Modern period

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá reflexí tématu moře v české literatuře 2. pol. 16. století a počátku 17. století. K analýze tématu jsme zvolili tři cestopisy, konkrétně se jedná o díla Cesta z Prahy do Benátek a odtud potom po moři až do Palestiny (1563) Oldřicha Prefáta z Vlkanova, Putování aneb Cesta z království českého do města Benátek, odtud po moři do země Svaté, země Jůdské a dále do Egypta a velikého města Kairu (1608) Kryštofa Haranta z Polžic a Bezdružic a spis Islandia aneb Krátké vypsání ostrova Islandu (1638) Daniela Vettera. Cestopisy budeme komparovat s encyklopedií Matouše Konečného Theatrum divinum (1616). V úvodu se zaměříme na biografii těchto autorů a literárněhistorickou recepci jejich osobnosti a díla. Stěžejní část práce se věnuje pojetí tématu moře v námi vybraných textech. Budeme se zabývat podobou moře, faunou, vztahem člověka a moře či legendami, pověstmi a rituály, které jsou s mořem spojené. Cílem práce je analýza tématu moře v námi zvolených dílech, přičemž se budeme snažit poukázat na možné podobnosti a rozdíly v přístupu autorů k této tematice.

Abstract:

The master's thesis deals with the reflection of the theme of the sea in Czech literature of the second half of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century. We have chosen three travelogues to analyse the topic, namely the works Cesta z Prahy do Benátek a odtud potom po moři až do Palestiny (1563) by Oldřich Prefát z Vlkanova, Putování aneb Cesta z království českého do města Benátek, odtud po moři do země Svaté, země Jůdské a dále do Egypta a velikého města Kairu (1608) by Kryštof Harant z Polžic a Bezdružic, and Islandia aneb Krátké vypsání ostrova Islandu (1638) by Daniel Vetter. We will compare the travelogues with the encyclopedia by Matouš Konečný Theatrum divinum (1616). We will begin with a biography of these authors and a literary-historical reception of their personalities and works. The main part of the thesis is devoted to the concept of the theme of the sea in our selected texts. We will deal with the form of the sea, the fauna, the relationship between human and the sea, and the legends and rituals connected with the sea. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the theme of the sea in our selected works, and we will try to point out possible similarities and differences in the authors approach to this theme.
