Witchcraft and magical practices - modern rationality and magical thinking

Abstract:

Práce Čarodějnictví a magické praktiky – moderní racionalita a magické myšlení se zamýšlí nad formami myšlení a jednání v západní společnosti. Poukazuje při tom na rozpor mezi deklarovaným způsobem chápání světa a způsobem jakým se tak děje na mikroúrovni každodenní reality, především v tzv. mezních situacích v životě jednotlivce. V rámci tohoto úsilí se snaží zachytit jednak formu racionality, která stála u zrodu moderní společnosti, figurovala při procesu tzv. „odkouzlení světa“ (jak jej popisuje Max Weber) a stala se hnací silou Okcidentu a moderní vědy, ale také způsob tzv. magického myšlení a jednání, kterému sice v dnešní době, především díky neetnocentrismu v antropologii obecně již přiznáváme vnitřní racionalitu (Clifford Geertz), ale přitom má moderní člověk tendenci vymezovat se vůči němu jako vůči přírodnímu či překonanému, nebo prostě jinému (Frazer, J.G., Lévi- Bruhl, Lévi- Strauss). V další rovině se práce snaží prokázat, že tzv. magické způsoby nazírání reality a každodenních událostí, jsou takřka univerzální záležitostí a v mezních situacích života jednotlivce poskytují oporu a ontologickou jistotu, přestože operují mimo vysvětlovací rámec vědy (Geertz, C., Latour, B.). K tomuto účelu je v práci popsáno několik forem čarodějnictví a magických praktik jež je možné sledovat v různých časoprostorových souřadnicích (Evans-Pritchard, E. E., Carlo Ginzburg). V rámci každé z nich byl identifikován magický prvek (takový, jenž spojuje příčinu a následek v situacích, kdy z pohledu moderní vědy nelze najít žádný kauzální vztah). Na široce rozšířených praktikách současnosti práce ukazuje, že takový prvek je masově přítomen i v myšlení a praktikách lidí současného západu.

Abstract:

The thesis Witchcraft and magical practices - modern rationality and magical thinking considers forms of thinking and acting in western society and points out the difference between the declared way of understanding the world and the way performed on micro level everyday reality, particularly in so called limiting or extreme situations in a life of an individual. Within the scope of this effort it tries to picture the form of rationality which was there at the beginning of modern society, took part during the process of so called ‘uncharming of the world’ (as Max Weber describes) and became the motive power of Occident and modern science. But also the way of so called magical thinking and acting, thanks to non-ethnocentric anthropological approach, we are currently granting the inner rationality (Cliford Geertz), but the modern man has tendency to define himself towards to that thinking as it is natural, outdated or just the different (Frazer, J. G., Lévi-Strauss). In another level, the thesis tries to proof that so called magical ways how to view the reality and everyday events has nearly universal validity and in the limiting or extreme situations of living grants the support and ontological certainty despite it’s operating out of explanatory scope of science. (Geertz, C., Latou, B.). There are several forms of witchcraft and magical practises described in the thesis for that purposes and we can study them on different spatiotemporal coordinates (Evans-Pritchard, E. E., Ginzburg, C.) There was identifed the magical component within the every one of them (such element that links the cause and the consequence in situations where, viewed from the modern science point of view, doesn’t exist any casual connection). On the rife practices of present time, the work shows that such element is collectively present in the thought and practices of the contemporary western people.
