Remittance prices on the example of the USA. Their development and fundamental influencing factors.

Abstract:

Proudy remitencí představují jeden z významných finančních toků do celé řady rozvojových ekonomik, a jsou proto často tématem výzkumu jejich dopadů na rozvoj. Práce se však zabývá poměrně málo zkoumaným tématem vývoje cen zasílání remitencí a snaží se identifikovat faktory, které ovlivňují jejich výši na příkladu USA. Data o cenách zasílání remitencí pochází z databáze Remittance Prices Worldwide. Mezi hlavní výzkumné otázky této práce patří: (i) Jaký je vývoj cen zasílání remitencí z USA a jaké zásadní faktory určují tyto ceny? (ii) Ovlivňují ceny zasílání remitencí množství zasílaných remitencí z USA? (iii) Jaké jsou hlavní rozdíly ve vývoji cen zasílání remitencí do Latinské Ameriky a Asie z USA a faktorech, které je ovlivňují? K zodpovězení těchto otázek jsou provedeny vybrané statistické a ekonometrické analýzy. Klíčovým bodem je regresní analýza s využitím metody OLS, kde jsou identifikovány faktory ovlivňující ceny zasílání remitencí z USA. Za zásadní proměnné můžeme považovat konkurenci mezi zprostředkovateli, výši HDP na osobu a také objem zahraničního obchodu s USA. S využitím Grangerovy kauzality a dynamických modelů panelových dat je následně testována kauzalita mezi cenami zasílání remitencí a jejich objemem. Na našich datech nebyla kauzalita prokázána ani jedním směrem. V závěru empirické části je provedena komparativní analýza mezi státy Latinské Ameriky a Asie. K porovnání faktorů ovlivňujících ceny zasílání remitencí je využito modelů panelových dat. Z výsledků lze konstatovat, že ceny zasílání remitencí z USA do Asie jsou citlivější na počet emigrujících osob, a tím také na objem bilaterálních remitencí.

Abstract:

Remittance flows represent one of significant financial flows to several developing economies and they are therefore often the subject of research of their development impacts. However, the work deals with a relatively little researched topic of the development of remittance prices and tries to identify the factors that affect their amount on the example of the USA. Data on remittance prices comes from the Remittance Prices Worldwide database. The main research questions of this work include: (i) What is the development of the remittance prices from the USA and what are the key factors determining these prices? (ii) Do remittance prices affect the volume of remittances sent from the USA? (iii) What are the main differences in the development of remittance prices to Latin America and Asia from the USA and in the factors that influence them? Selected statistical and econometric analyses are carried out to answer these questions. The key point is the regression analysis using the OLS method, where the factors influencing the remittance prices from the USA are identified. The competition between interme-diaries, the amount of GDP per capita and the volume of foreign trade with the USA can be considered as fundamental variables. Using Granger causality and dynamic models of panel data, the causality between the remittance prices and their volume is tested then. Our data have not proved causality in neither direction. At the end of the empirical part, a comparative analysis between Latin American and Asian countries is carried out. Panel data models are used to compare the factors influencing the remittance prices. The results show that the remittance prices from the USA to Asia are more sensitive to the number of emigrants, and thus also to the volume of bilateral remittances.
