Ethnic Identity among Children of Immigrants to Australia

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá zkušeností potomků imigrantů do Austrálie v procesu utváření jejich etnické identity. Teoretická část diplomové práce nastiňuje stručný historický vývoj imigrace do Austrálie a dále přednosti a nedostatky australského modelu multikuturalismu. Jelikož stále neexsituje jasná odpověď na otázku kdo je skutečný Australan a i v soudobé australské společnosti se vyskytují jisté formy rasismu vůči různým etnikům, je zřejmé, že politika multikulturalismu má své hranice. Ve snaze nalézt kořeny těchto problémů jsou v teoretické části řešeny otázky, zda-li má v multikulturní australské společnosti své místo nacionalismus a jak se australská národní identita utvářela v průběhu historie. Cílem teoretické části je nahlédnout téma národní, potažmo etnické identity z hlediska politologického, společenského, kulturního a historického, abych tak vytvořila dostatečný kontext pro pozdější analýzu. Analýzou dotazníků se zabývá následující praktická část. Klíčovou otázkou výzkumu je, zda-li mají potomci imigrantů do Austrálie problém jasně definovat svou etnickou identitu, jakožto možný důsledek vlivu dvou odlišných kultur, v nichž byli vychováni, a zda-li se cítí více Australany, nebo představiteli národů, z nichž pochází jejich rodiče. Dotazník je proto sestaven z otázek cílených na hlavní aspekty utvářející etnickou identitu jedince. Z odpovědí všech pěti účastníků výzkumu s rodiči evropského původu jsem vyvodila celkový závěr, že respondenti jsou sice hrdí na svůj etnický původ, avšak ve své osobnosti necítí rozpor dvojí identity, a naopak se v mnoha ohledech bez pochyb cítí Australany. Přestože výsledky výzkumu představují pouze nepatrný vzorek potomků imigrantů do Austrálie, poskytují dostatečný materiál k vyvození závěrů v otázce jejich etnické identity.

Abstract:

This thesis analyzes the experiences of children of immigrants to Australia. The process of ethnic identity formation is examined both in theory and practise, in multicultural Australia. The theoretical part summarizes a brief history of immigration to Australia and the strengths and weaknesses of Australian multiculturalism. Since the question about what it really means to be Australian remains controversial and since various forms of racism towards certain ethnic groups exist in contemporary Australia, there are obvious limits in the policy of multiculturalism. In order to reveal the roots of these problems, I discuss whether nationalism can exist in a multicultural society and describe how the national identity developed in the Australian history. The aim of the theoretical section is to view the topic from the political, social, cultural and historical point of view to provide a sufficient context for the analysis. The practical section then analyzes the results of the survey I have compiled for the thesis. The research question is whether the second-generation immigrants are experiencing problems to define their ethnic identity, as a result of the influence of two different backgrounds they were raised in, and whether they feel more affiliation to Australian or to their parents’ country of origin. Therefore, the questionnaire consists of questions aimed at the main aspects forming ethnic identity. I received answers from five contemporary second-generation European immigrants, and all of them expressed they feel proud to have an ethnic heritage; nevertheless, they certainly do not face any problem of double identity as they feel clearly Australian in many respects. Even though the results of the survey show the standpoint of just a small sample, some conclusions can be drawn to answer the research question about the ethnic identity among children of immigrants to Australia.
