Communication Strategies in CEO Letters to Shareholders: A Genre Analysis

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou vybraných dopisů generálních ředitelů akcionářům. Korpus se skládá ze sedmi dopisů, které jsou vytvořeny oděvními a farmaceutickými společnostmi. Všechny byly vybrány z výročních zpráv z let 2020 - 2021, jeden je z roku 2016. Cílem této práce je analyzovat komunikační strategie a ukázat, jak jsou vykresleny vztahy mezi generálními řediteli a akcionáři, včetně použitých jazykových prostředků. Dalším cílem této práce je zjistit, zdali jsou dopisy určeny pouze akcionářům, tak jako to implikuje oslovení. První část vysvětluje účel těchto dopisů a jejich umístění v celkovém textu. Druhá část obsahuje analýzu vybraných dopisů. Analyzovány jsou kontextové faktory, organizace textu a textualizace v lexikogramatice. Metodologie práce je založena na kritické žánrové analýze dle V. K. Bhatii. Základní principy této analýzy jsou objasněny v úvodní teoretické části. Bylo zjištěno, že v dopisech se poukazuje na více účastníků než jen na generální ředitele a akcionáře a bylo prokázáno, že účel těchto dopisů je, zejména navodit příjemnou atmosféru.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the analysis of the chosen CEOs' letters to shareholders. The corpus consists of seven letters which are taken from fashion and pharmaceutical companies. All letters are taken from company annual reports from years 2020 to 2021; one is from 2016. This thesis aims to analyse communication strategies, to show how the relationships between CEOs and shareholders are depicted, and what linguistic terms are used to do so. The second aim is to find out whether those letters are written only for shareholders as the salutation indicates. The first part explains the purpose of the CEO's letter and the position within the text. In addition, it explains the theory of critical genre analysis. The second part contains the analysis of the chosen letters together. The analysis focuses on contextual factors, textual organization and textualization in lexico-grammar. The methodology will be based on V.K. Bhatia. When the analysis was completed, more discourse participants were encoded than only CEOs and shareholders, and it was proven that letters are also written to establish a pleasant atmosphere.
