Content management system for hypertext atlas of dermatology

Abstract:

Cílem mé práce bylo přepracovat systém pro práci s patologickými atlasy vyvinutý doc. Feitem, patologem pracujícím ve Fakultní nemocnici v Brně. Původní systém je už 12 let starý. Během let se neorganizovaně rozrůstal do nynější podoby, která je už dlouhodobě neudržitelná. Také počet uživatelů atlasu se postupně zvyšoval až na dnešních deset tisíc registrovaných uživatelů. V mojí bakalářské práci jsem systém přepracoval tak, abych zpřehlednil strukturu atlasu, odstranil přebytečný kód a přidal do systému nové vlastnosti. Vycházel jsem ze starého systému a v něm použitých technologiích z důvodu toho, že doc. Feit, jako jediný správce systému, není příliš nakloněn učení se nových věcí. Zároveň musí systému rozumět, aby ho mohl používat. Datovou vrstvu tvoří XML soubory, z nich se pomocí programovacího jazyka Perl generuje webová podoba atlasu, která se dále uloží na server. O interakci uživatele s webovou stránkou se starají JavaScriptové skripty. Mezi hlavní nové vlastnosti systému možnost snadno anotovat obrázky pro každého uživatele (anotace je popisek obrázku, sestávající se ze šipky a textu). Dříve uživatel, musel text poslat doc. Feitovi, ten ho musel zkontrolovat, umístit na patřičné místo. Nyní je postup automatizovaný a doc. Feit pouze schvaluje nové anotace.

Abstract:

The primary aim of my bachelor thesis was to rework the system used for utilization of pathological atlases developed by doc. Feit from the University Hospital in Brno. The original system is twelve years old and during the years it has grown into current state that became simply unmanageable. Simultaneously, the number of users steadily increased up to current ten thousands of registered users. I have reworked the system in such a way that the overall structure has been made more transparent, the redundant code has been erased and I also added a set of new features. The new system is built on the old one and technologies previously used due to the fact that doc. Feit as the one and only administrator of the system prefers not to learn a lot of new things and ideas. In parallel, he has still to understand the system to be able to use it properly. I used the XML files as the data layer from which the web version of the atlases stored at a server is generated using Perl programming language. The interaction between an user and a web page is managed using corresponding JavaScript scripts. The main new feature of the system is the possibility to annotate the images for every user (the annotation corresponds to an image label composed from an arrow and a text). Originally, the text for annotation had to be send to doc. Feit who was forced to check it and properly place it. The annotation procedure in the new version is fully automated and the only responsibility of doc. Feit is to approve new annotations.
