Possibilities of Visual Expression – Graphic Design of the Theatre on a String

Abstract:

Práce Možnosti vizuální exprese – grafický design Divadla na provázku usiluje o pochopení estetické relace mezi grafickým designem (plakáty a programové sešity k inscenacím z období 1968–1989) a vlastním divadelním projevem. S ohledem na to, že Divadlo na provázku přiznávalo grafickému designu potenci k plnohodnotné umělecké, paradivadelní výpovědi, má tento poměr ʻ charakter vizuální exprese. Studie tedy zkoumá, jaké možnosti výtvarníci (Mysliveček, Ždímal, Stejskal, Skalník, Zavarský aj.) volí pro vyjádření sémantické struktury, která se realizuje v jednotlivých inscenacích a je předjímána nebo reflektována programovými prohlášeními. Princip nepravidelnosti a otevřenosti, přijatý divadlem jako řídící programové východisko, stojí za rozmanitostí užitých výtvarných prostředků (kresba, fotografie, koláž, koncept aj.). Sjednocuje je hledání inscenačního klíče společné všem divadelním složkám: grafický design není pouhou ilustrací k inscenaci. Studie se zaměřuje také na způsob, jakým výtvarníci na tiskovinách pojímali autorské herectví, a s tím spojenou metakomunikační reflexi grafického a divadelního jazyka. Tak grafický design podává v intencích divadelní komunikace Divadla na provázku syrovou i surovou výpověď o člověku, světě a době.

Abstract:

The thesis Possibilities of Visual Expression – Graphic Design of the Theatre on a String investigates aesthetic relation between graphic design (theatre posters and playbills for productions in 1968–1989) and specific theatre utterance. The graphic design was understood as capable to communicate complex artistic messages, therefore the relation may be described as visual expression. Irregularity as the leading aesthetic principle determined diversity of the applied artistic means or techniques (drawing, photography, pastiche, concept, etc.) in works of individual artists (Mysliveček, Ždímal, Stejskal, Skalník, Zavarský, etc.). The need to find common expression key integrates the graphic design with the other theatrical components, thus it does not literary illustrates a play. The paper focuses on the strategy of visual presentation of so-called author acting and reflection of the graphic or theatre communication code. Thereby the graphic design as the element of the complex theatre communication reflects human existence with the ingenuous authenticity.
