Alcoholism and delirium tremens in the work of Emile Zola - compared with psychiatric literature of the time.

Abstract:

The main goal of this bachelor work is an analysis of the psychiatric books published in France in the years 1830-1870 and the subsequent analysis of these books to find out which of them could have served as a basic medical texte for the descriptions of alcoholism and its symptoms, as they are described in L´Assomoir. In consequence, we could evaluate from the observed results the level of the medical expertness of Émile Zola, the rightness of the medical descriptions introduced in L´Assomoir - and detect whether Zola could have derived benefit as well from his proper studies and observations.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analýza psychiatrických publikací vydaných ve Francii v letech 1830 - 1870 a následná analýza, které z těchto knih mohly posloužit jako zdrojový text pro popisy alkoholismu, jak jsou uvedené v knize L´Assomoir. Následně bylo možné ze zjištěných výsledků vyhodnotit úroveň medicínských znalostí Emila Zoly, správnost medicínských popisů uvedných v knize L´Assomoir - a vypátrat, jestli mohl Emil Zola čerpat také z vlastních studií a pozorování.
