(In)authenticity and online self-presentation in the context of self-acceptance and narcissism

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá sebeprezentaci na Instagramu a její formy v kontextu osobnostních proměnných autenticity, sebepřijetí, narcismu a dodatečně osobnostních rysů Big Five. Cílem práce je prozkoumat vztahy mezi osobnostními proměněnými a třemi formami sebeprezentace: skutečnou, ideální a falešnou (Michikyan et al., 2015). Výzkum je kvantitativní. Použity byly škály: autenticity (KGAI-SF), osobnostních rysů (BFI-2XS), sebepřijetí (USAQ-short), narcismu (FFNI-SSF) a sebeprezentace na Instagramu (SPFBQ). Výzkumný vzorek tvořilo 195 respondentů (84,6 % žen, 15,4 % mužů). Průměrný věk byl 26 let. 60,5 % pocházelo z České republiky, 39,5 % ze zahraničí. Formulář byl administrován online v anglickém jazyce a šířen prostřednictvím sociálních sítí. K analýze dat byly použity statistické programy SPSS a JASP. K ověření hypotéz byly provedeny korelace osobnostních proměnných a forem online sebeprezentace. Výsledky ukázaly, že autenticita souvisí s online prezentací skutečného já (0.457, p < .001). Osobnostní rysy korelovaly s formami sebeprezentace slabě. Vztah se skutečnou sebeprezentací se prokázal u rysů extraverze (0.182, p < .05,) a svědomitost (0.167, p < .05). Neuroticismus koreloval s falešnou sebeprezentací (0.298, p < .001), vztah s ideální sebeprezentací se neprokázal. Bezpodmínečné sebepřijetí korelovalo se skutečnou sebeprezentací na Instagramu (0.316, p < .001). Podmínečné sebepřijetí mělo vztah s ideální sebeprezentací (0.153, p < .05) a falešnou sebeprezentací (0.392, p < .001). Výsledky neprokázaly signifikantní vztah grandiózního narcismu se sebeprezentací skutečného já. Zranitelný narcismus souvisel s prezentací falešného já (0.434, p < .001) a také se sebeprezentací ideálního já (0.151, p < .05). Lineární regresní analýza ukázala, že signifikantní vliv na skutečnou sebeprezentaci online má z proměnných pouze autenticita, na ideální sebeprezentaci grandiózní narcismus a na falešnou sebeprezentaci grandiózní i zranitelný narcismus. Tato práce ověřuje zjištění dřívějších výzkumů a doplňuje je o nové poznatky.

Abstract:

This thesis examines self-presentation on Instagram and its forms in the context of the personality variables of authenticity, self-acceptance, narcissism and additionally the Big Five personality traits. The aim of this paper is to explore the relationships between personality variables and three forms of self-presentation: real, ideal, and fake (Michikyan et al., 2015). The research is quantitative, the following scales were used: Authenticity (KGAI SF), Personality traits (BFI-2XS), Self-acceptance (USAQ-short), Narcissism (FFNI SSF) and Self-presentation on Instagram (SPFBQ) - modified. The research sample consisted of 195 respondents (84.6 % female, 15.4 % male). The average age was 26 years. 60.5 % were from the Czech Republic, 39.5 % from abroad. The form was administered online and distributed through social networks. SPSS and JASP were used for data analysis. To test the hypotheses, correlations were established between personality variables and forms of online self-presentation. The results showed that authenticity was related to real online self-presentation (0.457, p < .001). Personality traits correlated weakly with forms of self-presentation. The relation with true self-presentation was found for the traits extraversion (0.182, p < .05) and conscientiousness (0.167, p < .05). Neuroticism correlated with false self presentation (0.298, p < .001), but no relation was found with ideal self-presentation. Unconditional self-acceptance correlated with real self-presentation on Instagram (0.316, p < .001). Contrary, conditional self-acceptance was correlated with ideal self presentation (0.153, p < .05) and false self-presentation (0.392, p < .001). There was no significant relationship between grandiose narcissism and true self-presentation. Vulnerable narcissism was related to both false self-presentation (0.434, p < .001) and ideal self-presentation (0.151, p < .05). Linear regression analysis showed that of the variables, only authenticity had a significant effect on actual online self-presentation. Grandiose narcissism influenced ideal self-presentation and both grandiose and vulnerable narcissism influenced false self-presentation. This paper supports the findings of earlier research and adds new insights.
