Contrastive Rhetoric for Teaching Purposes in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o nepříliš známé teorii, která se zabývá výukou psaní v anglickém jazyce - teorii Contrastive Rhetoric. Tento pojem se poprvé objevil v šedesátých letech v USA a za jeho rozšířením stál lingvista Robert Kaplan. Tato teorie tvrdí, že pro studenty angličtiny není dostatečné naučit se gramatiku a syntaktická pravidla jazyka, ale je také třeba pochopit logiku anglického stylu psaní. To je zapříčiněno zejména tím, že různé jazykové skupiny mají odlišné styly psaní a studenti si tyto konvence z jejich rodných jazyků přenášejí i do psaní v jazyce cizím. Vzniká tak text, který je gramaticky a syntakticky správný, ale nezní rodilým mluvčím přirozeně. Diplomová práce je rozdělena do devíti kapitol. V prvních kapitolách je teorie více přiblížena a je vysvětlen její původ a historický vývoj. Poté jsou okomentovány kritiky této teorie, které jsou užitečným zdrojem pro analýzu Contrastive Rhetoric z více hledisek. Výzkumy, které byly v této sféře provedeny, jsou uvedeny v další samostatné kapitole. Většina těchto výzkumů zkoumá různé světové jazyky a porovnává je s angličtinou, ale bohužel pouze drtivá menšina z nich sedotýká České republiky. Proto je hlavní důraz práce kladen na tuto teorii v českém kontextu. Představeny jsou hlavní rozdíly mezi českým a anglickým stylem psaní,rozebrána je také situace výuky psaní v České republice a současná maturitní zkouška z psaní v angličtině. Byl také proveden malý výzkum mezi vysokoškolskými učiteli Akademického psaní v angličtině, u kterých se zjišťoval jejich názor na výuku psaní v angličtině na českých univerzitách. Výzkum se také snažil zjistit, zda učitelé znají teorii Contrastive Rhetoric a zda si myslí, že by mohla na českých školách být použita, popřípadě jak. Tento výzkum byl omezen malým počtem účastníků, ale přináší zajímavé výsledky, které mohou být základem dalších zkoumání.

Abstract:

This paper investigates a not very well known theory about teaching writing in English – the Contrastive Rhetoric theory. This theory emerged in the 60s in the USA and it was a linguist, Robert Kaplan, who was the forefather of its beginnings. The theory says that for students of English it is not enough to learn the grammar and syntactic rules of the L2 but they need to grasp the logic of the English writing style as well. This is because different language groups have different writing styles and students transfer their L1 writing conventions into L2. This results in a text that is perfect from the grammatical and syntactic point of view but it does not sound natural to English native speakers. The thesis is divided into nine chapters. In first chapters the theory is introduced and its history is presented. Then the critiques of this theory are commented on as they are a useful source for analyzing the theory from different points of view. A research that was done in this area is also presented in a separate chapter. Unfortunately, most of the studies investigated different world languages versus English and only a little work was done on this topic in the Czech Republic. The main focus of the thesis is, therefore, put on the Czech context of this theory; the main differences between Czech and English writing styles are introduced, and the situation of teaching writing in the Czech Republic is elaborated on as well. A small-scale exploratory research was also conducted to see what university teachers of Academic Writing courses think about teaching English writing to Czech students and to see whether they are acquainted with the Contrastive Rhetoric theory. They were also asked what they think of it and if they think it could be used for teaching writing at Czech schools. This research has its limitations because of the small number of participants but it provides interesting results that could be elaborated on further.
