Laser spectroscopy in cultural heritage objects analysis

Abstract:

Předkládaná disertační práce popisuje aplikace metod laserové spektroskopie v průzkumu předmětů kulturního dědictví. Důraz na zachování integrity takovýchto předmětů neumožňuje invazivní odběr vzorků. Pro jejich analýzu jsou tedy voleny neinvazivní, popřípadě mikroinvazivní metody, u nichž dochází k zanedbatelnému poškození předmětů. První část práce je zaměřena na použití spektroskopie laserem buzeného plazmatu (LIBS) v hloubkovém profilování vrstevnatých předmětů – modelových vzorků historických maleb, mozaikových skel a fragmentů glazované archeologické keramiky. Postupná ablace zacílením většího počtu laserových pulzů do jednoho bodu umožnila rozlišit jednotlivé vrstvy vzorků v hloubkových profilech, vytvořených na základě LIBS spekter měřených pro každý pulz. Pomocí různých technik, např. 3D digitální mikroskopie, optického profilování nebo rentgenové počítačové mikrotomografie, byla také měřena hloubka kráterů s cílem určit průměrnou ablační rychlost. Ta byla poté použita ke stanovení tloušťky jednotlivých vrstev. Výsledky LIBS analýzy modelových vzorků historických maleb byly porovnány s výsledky rentgenové fluorescence jako doplňkové analytické metody. Limity obou metod byly popsány. Ve druhé části byla navržena metodologie pro provenienční analýzu hlinkových pigmentů pomocí laserové ablace spojené s hmotnostní spektrometrií s indukčně vázaným plazmatem (LA-ICP-MS). Hlinkové pigmenty, které byly používány zejména v podkladových vrstvách maleb, jsou často se vyskytujícím materiálem a lze u nich tedy předpokládat, že pochází z regionálních zdrojů. Porovnáním chemického složení včetně stopových prvků stanoveného pomocí LA-ICP-MS bylo možné ztotožnit komerčně dostupný pigment a podkladovou vrstvu z obrazu J. G. de Hamiltona se vzorkem odebraným v historickém lomu Troschenreuth v Německu. Dva další vzorky pocházející ze zdrojů v České republice a Itálii přitom v tomto porovnání vykazovaly značné rozdíly.

Abstract:

The present thesis describes the applications of laser-based spectroscopic techniques in the investigation of the objects of cultural heritage. Since the integrity of the artworks has to be preserved, an invasive sampling should always be prevented. Non-invasive or micro-invasive techniques allowing a material composition determination with a minimal harm caused to the object are, thus, searched for. The first part of the thesis is focused on the utilization of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) in the depth-resolved analysis of layered objects, including model samples of historical paintings, glass tesserae and fragments of glazed archaeological ceramics. Individual layers were clearly distinguishable in the depth profiles created based on the LIBS spectra acquired per each laser pulse. The crater depths were measured using diverse analytical techniques including a 3D digital microscopy, an optical profiling and an X-ray computed tomography in order to determine the average ablation rate and the thickness of individual layers. The complementarity of LIBS and X-ray fluorescence was evaluated on the example of painting model samples and the limits of both techniques were demonstrated. In the second part, a methodology for a provenance analysis of clay-based pigments by means of laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) was suggested. Clay-based pigments used mainly as ground layers in paintings are very common and a regional source is, therefore, expected. Linking of a commercially available powdered pigment and a ground layer from a painting by J. G. de Hamilton to a sample collected in a historical quarry in Troschenreuth, Germany was enabled by the comparison of their chemical composition including trace elements determined by LA-ICP-MS. In contrast, other two clay samples from the sources in the Czech Republic and Italy showed significant differences.
