Virulence factors at less common yeast species isolated from clinical material

Abstract:

Kvasinky rodu Candida jsou nejčastějším a klinicky nejvýznamnějším původcem kvasinkových infekcí. Obecně je za nejvíce patogenní pokládán druh C. albicans. V posledních dvou desetiletích však vzrostl počet infekcí, způsobených tzv. non – albicans druhy. Jedná se zejména o C. glabrata, C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis a C. krusei. Kandidy své patogenní vlastnosti uplatňují především na predisponovaném území, za účasti faktorů virulence, které jim usnadňují vstup, přežívání, množení a šíření v hostitelském organismu. Mezi nejčastěji citované faktory virulence patří adheze, tvorba biofilmu, sekrece hydrolytických enzymů a morfogeneze. V této práci bylo na tvorbu biofilmu, produkci fosfolipáz a hemolytickou aktivitu testováno 120 kmenů reprezentujících 9 druhů kandid. Konkrétně se jednalo o 25 kmenů C. tropicalis, 20 kmenů C. albicans, 20 kmenů C. dubliniensis, 15 kmenů C. glabrata,10 kmenů C. krusei, 10 kmenů C. lusitaniae, 10 kmenů C. parapsilosis, 5 kmenů C. kefyr a 5 kmenů C. pelliculosa. Výskyt všech testovaných faktorů byl potvrzen u C. albicans. U non – albicans druhů byla zaznamenána pouze tvorba biofilmu a hemolytická aktivita. Výskyt již zmíněných a i dalších faktorů virulence u C. albicans, může být jedním z důvodů její stále trvající dominance v klinickém materiálu

Abstract:

Yeasts of the genus Candida are the most common and clinically most important agent of yeast infections. C. albicans is generally considered the most pathogenic species. In the last two decades, the number of infections caused by the non - albicans species increased. They are particulary C. glabrata, C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis and C. krusei. Candida species apply own pathogenic properties on predisposed territory, with the participation of virulence factors that facilitate their entry, survival, multiplication and dissemination in the host organism. The most frequently cited virulence factors include adhesion, biofilm formation, secretion of hydrolytic enzymes and morphogenesis. In this work 120 strains representing nine kinds of Candida species were tested. There were 25 isolates of C. tropicalis, 20 isolates of C. albicans, 20 isolates of C. dubliniensis,15 isolates of C. glabrata, 10 isolates of C. krusei, 10 isolates of C. lusitaniae, 10 isolates of C. parapsilosis, 5 isolates of C. kefyr and 5 isolates of C. pelliculosa. Biofilm formation, production of phospholipases and haemolytic activity were investigated. The incidence of all three factors was confirmed only at C. albicans isolates. Non - albicans species were positive only for biofilm formation and haemolytic activity. The occurrence of the mentioned and also other virulence factors in C. albicans, may be one of reasons for continuing dominance of this species in clinical material.
