Thinking about Yidish in the Context of its Contact with European Languages and Hebrew

Abstract:

The key theme of this thesis is the linguistic contact of Yiddish with German, Slavic languages and Hebrew. In the opening part, an overall characteristics of Yiddish is given. Subsequent chapters outline the historical background and events having influenced the development of Yiddish. Further on, opinions on Yiddish from the linguistic perspective are presented, alongside with opinions of certain political and religious groups that had to be tackled. The second part of the thesis, then, focuses on linguistic interchange in the lexical field; particularly on borrowings, hybrid forms, diminutives and changes of meaning.

Abstract:

Ústředním tématem této diplomové práce je jazykový kontakt jidiš s němčinou, se slovanskými jazyky a s hebrejštinou. Úvodní část práce je věnována charakteristice jidiš. V dalších kapitolách jsou nastíněny historické události, které měly vliv na vývoj tohoto jazyka. Také jsou zde rozebrány názory na jidiš z pohledu jazykovědy a některých politických a náboženských hnutí, která byla s jidiš konfrontována. Druhý oddíl práce je zaměřen na jazykovou výměnu v lexikální oblasti, konkrétně na přejatá slova, hybridní tvary, zdrobněliny a změnu významu.
