Submissed to the Qur'an: the Representation of Romance between a Dutch and an Arab in Robert Anker's Hajar en Daan and Abdelkader Benali's De langverwachte

Abstract:

Ve své práci studuji způsob zobrazení milostného vztahu mezi osobou nizozemského původu a přistěhovalcem s arabskými kořeny ve dvou nizozemských knihách. Hajar en Daan spisovatele Roberta Ankera popisuje poměr nizozemského učitele Daana se sedmnáctiletou marockou dívkou Hajar. Abdelkader Benali v románu De langverwachte popisuje mimo jiné vztah sedmnáctiletých spolužáků - Mehdiho, který pochází z marocké komunity, a Nizo-zemky Diany. Hlavní část práce je věnována analýze typu ´close reading´- tedy podrobnému čtení zkoumaných románů bez použití biografických či kulturně-historických podkladů. Rozhodla jsem se zaměřit na analýzu vyprávěcích postupů: hlavních postav, fokalizátorů, vypravěčů, neboť právě volba fokalizátora či vypravěče ve výsledku může ovlivnit způsob zobrazení milostného vztahu a dalších motivů, především islámského náboženství. Mimo islám popisuji i práci s motivy přistěhovalecké rodiny, imáma, zacházení se ženami a ženské síly. Nejdůležitějším závěrem, který však byl částečně předpokládán, je, že volba fokalizátorů má přímý vliv na zobrazení milostného vztahu a hlavně islámu. Také se ukázalo, že islámské náboženství a související motivy, např. přistěhovalecká rodina a zacházení se ženami, hrají podstatnou roli a milostný vztah cele určují. Odtud tedy pochází i název mé práce – „Podroben Koránu“.

Abstract:

In my scription I study the representation of a romance between a person who comes from the Netherlands and an immigrant with Arabian backgroung. I work with the novel Hajar en Daan by Robert Anker, which presents a love story of a teacher Daan and his student – Moroccan girl Hajar. De langverwachte by Abdelkader Benali tells a story of two classmates: Dutch girl Diana and Moroccan Mehdi fall in love and soon they´re having a baby. I analyse these two books with the ´close reading´ method, which means I concentrate just on the two texts without any background or cultural-historical information. I decided to describe the narrational modes, the characters, narrators and the focalizators in particular. Presuming that the choice of narrator and focalisator affects the representation of motives and mainly the romance, I analyzed the work with motives like Islam, family of immigrants, treating women and women power. Most important conclusion, as awaited, shows that it is really the focalizator or narrator who creates the representation of the romance and other motives in these two books. Another conclusion states the leading role of Islam in that two romances. It is Islam and similar motives like immigrants and treating women who play crucial part in the development of the love stories. Hence also the title of my work: Submissed to the Qur´an.
