The association between loneliness and health in university students

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá souvislostí mezi osamělostí a zdravím u vysokoškolských studentů, přičemž se zaměřuje na to, skrze jaké faktory může být osamělost se zdravotním stavem spojena. Práce si klade za cíl objasnit, zda právě rizikové chování pro zdraví může vysvětlovat souvislost mezi osamělostí a zdravím. Dalším cílem práce je objasnit, zda lze souvislost mezi osamělostí a rizikovým chováním pro zdraví vysvětlit pomocí mechanismu seberegulace. V teoretické části se práce věnuje shrnutí konceptu osamělosti, spojitostí mezi osamělostí, zdravím a rizikovým chováním pro zdraví, dále vymezením pojmu seberegulace a spojením osamělosti a seberegulace. Na konci teoretické části je uveden obrázek modelu vztahů mezi jednotlivými proměnnými. Data byla sesbírána pomocí internetového dotazníkového šetření. Výzkumný vzorek obsahoval celkem 274 respondentů, z toho 114 (41,6%) mužů a 160 (58,4%) žen. Jednalo se o vysokoškolské studenty prezenčního studia. Výsledky potvrdily, že osamělejší studenti subjektivně hodnotí svůj zdravotní stav hůře než méně osamělí studenti a také více trpí zdravotními potížemi. U rizikového chování pro zdraví se nepotvrdila statisticky významná souvislost s osamělostí v případě kouření tabákových výrobků, užívání alkoholu, marihuany nebo jiných drog. Jediné rizikové chování pro zdraví, které se ukázalo jako statistiky významné, byl nedostatek pohybu. Nepotvrdila se ani souvislost osamělosti s indexem tělesné hmotnosti (BMI). Vzhledem k tomu, že nebyl nalezen dostatečně silný vztah mezi osamělostí a rizikovým chováním pro zdraví, tak nebyla provedena mediační analýza pro zjištění, zda tento vztah zprostředkovává seberegulace. Výsledky práce tak dokládají vztah mezi osamělostí a zdravím u vysokoškolských studentů, avšak nepotvrdily, že by tento vztah byl zprostředkován rizikovým chováním pro zdraví.

Abstract:

The master‘s thesis deals with the connection between loneliness and health among university students, focusing on the factors through which loneliness can be connected to health. The main goal is to clarify whether health risk behavior can explain the link between loneliness and health. Another goal is to clarify whether the link between loneliness and health risk behavior can be explained by the mechanism of self-regulation. In the theoretical part, the thesis deals with summarizing the concept of loneliness, the connections between loneliness, health and health risk behavior, as well as the definition of the concept of self-regulation and the connection between loneliness and self-regulation. At the end of the theoretical part, there is a picture of the model of the relationships between the individual variables. Data were collected using an internet questionnaire survey. The research sample included a total of 274 respondents, of which 114 (41,6%) were men and 160 (58,4%) were women. These were full-time university students. The results confirmed that lonelier students subjectively evaluate their health status worse than less lonely students and also suffer more from health problems. For health risk behaviors, no statistically significant association with loneliness was confirmed in the case of smoking tobacco products, using alcohol, marijuana, or other drugs. The only health risk behavior that emerged as statistically significant was lack of physical activity. The association of loneliness with body mass index (BMI) was also not confirmed. Since a sufficiently strong relationship between loneliness and health risk behavior was not found, a mediation analysis was not conducted to determine whether this relationship is mediated by self-regulation. The results of the thesis thus demonstrate the relationship between loneliness and health among university students, but they did not confirm that this relationship is mediated by health risk behavior.
