The Personification of Death in the Work of Stefano della Bella

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce se zabývá výskytem personifikované smrti v podobě kostlivce v tvorbě Stefana della Belly, italského umělce ze 17. století. Hlavní pozornost je věnována leptu Smrt na bitevním poli a sérii nazývané Cinq morts, která představuje scény vítězství smrti nad člověkem. Při podrobném popisu jednotlivých výjevů této série je evidentní, že řazení těchto děl do homogenního souboru se jeví jako problematické. Práce se snaží představit možnou interpretaci této série, do které lze zařadit i několik dochovaných kreseb s podobným motivem. Text se také soustředí na proměnu umělcova přístupu k motivu triumfující smrti v kontextu soudobých událostí.

Abstract:

The presented bachelor thesis discusses the presence of the personification of death as a skeleton in the work of Stefano della Bella, the Italian artist from the 17th century. The main attention is paid to etching Death on the Battlefield and the series called Cinq morts that presents the scenes of death’s victory over the human being. From the detailed description of the individual scenes of this series, it is evident that the sorting these artworks into a homogeneous set seems problematic. The work presents a possible interpretation of this series, including some extant drawings with a similar motif. The text also focuses on the change of the artist’s approach to the motif of the triumph of death in the context of that time.
