Stories and storytelling in the Native American Literature: The power of word in Leslie M. Silko's "Ceremony"

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaobírá tématem literatury původních obyvatel Severní Ameriky se zaměřením na sílu psaného i mluveného slova. Snaží se o představení pojetí oblasti literatury původními obyvateli Severní Ameriky. Soustředí se především na dílo severoamerické autorky Leslie M. Silko s názvem Ceremony. Tato kniha zachycuje význam vyprávění příběhů v kulturách původních obyvatel Severní Ameriky, jejich přístup k různým druhům obřadů, a nabízí bližší náhled do tradic, které jsou těmito kulturami praktikovány. Toto dílo a motivy, které jsou v něm zachyceny a které jsou klíčové pro tuto bakalářskou práci, jsou představeny skrze příběh hlavní postavy jménem Tayo. Tato práce s pomocí knihy Leslie M. Silko pojednává o způsobu, jakým příběhy a jejich vyprávění fungují jako důležité obřadní a léčivé postupy, vytvářející a rozvíjející nejen kolektivní, ale i individuální identitu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of Native American literature with regard to the power of both written and spoken word. It aims to show the Native American approach to the field of literature. It mainly focuses on the work of Native American author Leslie M. Silko called Ceremony. This novel incorporates the importance of storytelling in the Native American cultures, their attitude towards ceremonies and rituals, and offers an insight into the traditions within these cultures. The narrative and its themes which are key to this bachelor thesis are presented through the story of Tayo, the main character. With the help of Silko's work, the thesis discusses the way stories and storytelling function as important ceremonial and healing practices, constituting and nurturing not only communal but also individual identity.
