Do underachievers have a chance in success?

Abstract:

Diplomová práce otevírá diskuzi nad problematikou slabších studentů zasazenou do kontextu podmínek pandemie COVID-19. Cílem práce je popsat, jak slabší studenti vnímají svůj výraznější akademický úspěch, a to na vzorku maturantů roku 2020, kteří byli ovlivněni uzavřením škol. Výzkumné šetření je zastřešeno teorií rolí, přičemž klíčovým pojmem se stává cílová role, která shrnuje to, k čemu studenti ve svém maturitním ročníku směřovali. Bylo uskutečněno šest polostrukturovaných rozhovorů na téma přípravy k maturitní i přijímací zkoušce. Analýza dat ukázala nejen, jací studenti do procesu přípravy vstupují a jak se jejich role proměňuje v průběhu, ale také jaké strategie použili k tomu, aby se jim podařilo uspět. Klíčovým faktorem v příběhu studentů je však uzavření škol, které jim napomohlo v jejich úspěchu. Data ukazují, že právě tyto nové podmínky studentům otevřely unikátní příležitost, kterou mohli využít ve svůj prospěch, a dosáhnout mnohem výš, než se od nich očekává.

Abstract:

This thesis opens up the discussion on the issue of underachievers in the context of the global pandemic COVID-19. The objective is to describe underachievers’ perspectives on their extraordinary achievement using a sample of high school graduates of 2020 affected by lockdown. Theoretical background includes the role theory giving in the concept of the goal-oriented role to describe the path that led to students’ success. Hence, six semi-structured interviews were conducted. Data analysis reveals who are the students coming to tell their story and how their role changed on the way to achievement. And additionally, what strategies they used to help them succeed. Most importantly, the data suggest that the pandemic and the lockdown were crucial factors for their achievement. Significantly, it was these circumstances that enabled students to seize the opportunity and succeed.
