Origin, Meaning and Usage of the Runic Script in J.R.R. Tolkien's Selected Works

Abstract:

This thesis focused on the similarities and differences in terms of form and usage of the runes used in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien and the runes used by the Germanic tribes. It examined what types of runes can be found in the books as well as what is the intention behind them. In the second part of the thesis I transliterated all the texts written in runes that appear in the works mentioned. The aim of this work was to find out to what degree were the Tolkien's runes inspired by the runes used in the Northern Europe and the British Isles, and which type exactly was the greatest source of inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien when inventing them. In the analysis I compared Tolkien's runes with the various types of runes used in history as well as examined their usage. I found out that the runes in The Hobbit are an altered version of the Anglo-Saxon runes, whereas the runic alphabet introduced in The Lord of the Rings is inspired by all three main types of historic runes (older fu?ark, younger fu?ark, Anglo-Saxon fu?orc), but the greatest influence had the Anglo-Saxon runic alphabet. The usage of runes is mainly for communicative purposes in both works, although in The Lord of the Rings, two examples of runes used with magical intent can be found.

Tato práce se zaměřuje na podobnosti a rozdíly ve formě a používání run v Hobitovi a Pánovi prstenů od J.R.R. Tolkiena a run používaných germánskými kmeny. Práce zkoumá, jaký druh run se v knihách používá a za jakým účelem. V druhé části práce jsem přepsala všechny runové texty, které se ve zmíněných dílech vyskytly, do latinky. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, do jaké míry byly Tolkienovy runy inspirované runami používanými v severní Evropě a na Britském souostroví a jaký druh run byl pro Tolkiena největším zdrojem inspirace při jejich vytváření. V analýze jsem porovnala Tolkienovy runy s různými druhy run používanými v historii, a dále jsem také zkoumala jejich používání. Zjistila jsem, že runy v Hobitovi jsou upravenou verzí anglosaských run, zatímco runová abeceda zavedená v Pánovi prstenů je inspirovaná všemi třemi hlavními druhy historických run (starším fu?arkem, mladším fu?arkem a anglosaským fu?orcem), ale největší vliv měla anglosaská runová abeceda. Runy jsou v obou dílech používány především ke komunikačním cílům, nicméně v Pánovi prstenů se nacházejí dva příklady run použitých k magickým účelům.
