The influence of cognitive style on map reading

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je konkrétně zaměřena na vliv analytického a holistického kognitivního stylu na kategorizaci na mapě. V rámci empirické části byla vytvořena a administrována sada tematických map s multivariantními znaky a dvěma typy úkolů. První typ úkolu bylo zaznačit, na základě znaků, souvislou oblast podle svého vlastního uvážení. Druhý typ úkolu bylo zaznačit, na základě znaků, souvislou oblast podle zadaného kritéria. Značení oblastí na mapě bylo poté vyhodnoceno a porovnáno s výkonem v adaptaci Navonova testu hierarchických figur. Tento test je používaný ke stanovení analytického nebo holistického kognitivního stylu. V prvním typu úkolu se projevily rozdíly v kategorizaci v souvislosti s kognitivním stylem participantů. V druhém typu úkolu zaznačili všichni participanti oblasti podobně, rozdíly se tedy projevily méně. Tyto výsledky by mohly naznačovat, že přesnější zadání rozdíly vyplývající z odlišného kognitivního stylu snižuje. Mimo to byly získány další poznatky týkající se vlivu analytického a holistického kognitivního stylu na kategorizaci na mapě. Výsledky práce by mohly mít význam pro další psychologický a kartografický výzkum.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the influence of analytic and holistic cognitive style on categorization on map. In the empirical part, a set of thematic maps with multivariate symbols and two types of tasks were developed and administered.The first type of task was to mark, on the basis of symbols, a coherent, continuous area according to the participant´s own decision. The second one was to mark, on the basis of symbols, a coherent, continuous area which fits specific criterion. The marking of areas on the map have then been evaluated and compared with the participant´s performance in an adaptation of Navon Hierarchical Figure Test. This test is used to determine the holistic and the analytic cognitive style.In the first type of task, differences in categorization appeared in relation to the participants´ cognitive style. In the second type of task, all participants marked the areas similarly, thus the differences manifested themselves to a lesser extent. These results might indicate that a more accurate task assignment reduces the differences induced by different cognitive styles. In addition, there have been other findings regarding the impact of cognitive style on categorization on maps. The presented results might prove to have significance for further psychological and cartographic research.
